The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, considered – on Wednesday – that the ceasefire in Gaza is insufficient in the face of the “genocide” to which the Palestinian people are being subjected by the United States and Israel.
Albanese, who is a UN delegate but does not speak on behalf of the organization, said, “This is not a war, but rather genocide, as there is an intention to eliminate a people.”
Albanese’s statement came while a fragile truce was taking effect in Gaza within the framework of an agreement reached under American auspices to put an end to a two-year war, which includes the recovery of the bodies of prisoners and the introduction of more aid into the Palestinian Strip, and later its reconstruction.
Albanese said that the plan is “completely insufficient and inconsistent with international law,” stressing the necessity of commitment to “ending the occupation, ending the exploitation of Palestinian resources, and ending colonialism.”
The Israeli occupation forces currently control about half of the territory of the Palestinian Strip.
A history of collusion
According to Agence France-Presse, several international investigators and human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, accuse Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, which is denied by the Hebrew state, which describes the accusations as “distorted and false,” accusing those who made them of anti-Semitism.
Albanese made her recent statements while she was in South Africa, the country that filed a complaint against Israel before the International Court of Justice accusing the Hebrew state of committing “genocide” in Gaza, to deliver the annual “Nelson Mandela Lecture” on October 25.
Albanese has been subject to US sanctions since July due to her public criticism of Israel.
The UN rapporteur will present her new report to the international organization in the coming days, in which she says – according to the copy published by the United Nations on its website – that Western support for Israel in its war with Hamas “culminates a long history of complicity.”
