Acsa to raise billions for massive airport upgrade

Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) is gearing up for its biggest infrastructure push in years, committing R21.7 billion over the next 12 months to modernise and expand its airport network.

According to Chief Financial Officer Luzuko Mbotya, about half of that funding, R10 billion, will be raised through long-term infrastructure debt instruments and loans on favourable terms.

The rest will be drawn from Acsa’s own reserves, boosted by stronger operating performance.

Airport upgrades coming to South Africa

Acsa has become an attractive prospect for lenders, thanks to its improved financial standing. Profit more than doubled to R1.1 billion in the year through March 2025, while the company holds R5.9 billion in cash reserves.

The investment will drive upgrades across Acsa’s airport network through 2032. Among the most ambitious projects is a R5.7 billion cargo terminal at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, slated for completion in 2028–29. CEO Mpumi Mpofu confirmed that preparatory work and enablement phases have already begun.

For the 2025/26 financial year, Acsa has set aside R2.3 billion for refurbishment and rehabilitation projects.

Projects include an extension to the domestic departures lounge at Cape Town International Airport, runway improvements, as well as upgrades to passenger terminals.
