Three Climáximo supporters sat at the finish line of the EDP Half Marathon this Sunday, October 26, to “denounce the washing of the blood that is on the hands of the fossil industry, with sponsorship of social and sporting events”.
These activists accuse EDP, which sponsors the Half Marathon, of “trying to wash its image through a sporting event when, in reality, it is a company directly responsible for the deaths and forced evictions resulting from the climate crisis that this company consciously causes”.
“End the Fossil by 2030!” and “3% of the territory burned” were some of the messages that appeared on the posters they held as they sat on the ground, next to the finish line.
According to the action’s spokesperson, Matilde Alvim, cited in a statement, this action aims to “denounce the company EDP as directly responsible for the climate crisis and the disasters associated with it. Despite all the greenwashing carried out by this company, we must be clear: EDP continues to own electricity production plants using fossil gas, preventing a fair transition.
Emanuel Daoudi Dinday, from Tanzania, and Cynthi Chepkwony, from Kenya, won first place in the Lisbon Half Marathon, for men and women, respectively. The Portuguese Rui Pinto, from Sporting, arrived in fifth place at Terreiro do Paço. Miguel Marques, from SC Braga, was the second best national representative among the approximately 10 thousand registered in the race, organized by Maratona Clube de Portugal.
