Adam Sandler’s Humble Response to His Role in ‘Jay Kelly’ Perfectly Captures Who He Is

You don’t have to search far to find one of the many examples that explain why many believe that Adam Sandler is one of the most down-to-earth and selfless names in Hollywood. Between random acts of kindness, Sandler’s praise of a wide array of co-stars, fellow actors, athletes, and just normal everyday fans, along with his generous approach to life, it’s hard to find anyone who’s had strong criticism of the 58-year-old actor.

Sandler’s approach to his job, one that many envy and aspire to have one day, has largely remained unchanged since his early days of acting. This is why, when he spoke about taking on a co-starring role alongside George Clooney in the film Jay Kelly, his comments perfectly encapsulated everything Sandler has become throughout his career.

Although Sandler has made some of the most memorable comedies of the 2000s, his step into the role of Ron, the straight-shooter manager of Jay Kelly (Clooney), may seem unique. However, he’s already received glowing reviews of his work from Clooney himself, and even Sandler admitted the script for the upcoming movie, Jay Kelly, is a “gift,” as Variety revealed.

“Being in this movie and not just trying to find jokes and laugh moments, that’s what’s amazing,” Sandler said during the official press conference for Jay Kelly at Venice Film Festival. “I’ve done two movies with Noah, and I could not be more proud to be in the feeling it gives you. He knows how to do everything, and then he finds places to make you laugh. All our characters give you a moment to laugh and feel pain.”

“As an actor, when you read a script like this you say, ‘Holy s—, I can’t believe I’m getting this gift,” Sandler concluded.

Even after playing the lead role in comedies like Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, The Waterboy, Big Daddy, and so many others, Sandler’s grounded approach to this specific role has to resonate with fans.

And while Sandler may be more than happy to don his beloved basketball shorts and a comfortable hoodie, it’s quickly become apparent that no matter what the role, he’s still the same level-headed guy who gets just as excited for a great script—even if he’s been doing this since the late 1980s.

Clooney may have summed it up best while discussing how impressive Sandler is as an actor with Variety ahead of Jay Kelly’s release, calling his co-star a “beautiful, heartfelt, soulful actor.”

“This film, more than any film Adam has done, shows what a beautiful, heartfelt, soulful actor he is.”
