When it was announced that Ryan Murphy would be working on the third Netflix instalment of his true crime series Monster, everyone shuddered to think what might be next. We had the incredibly divisive and discourse heavy Jeffrey Dahmer series first, which saw Evan Peters get acclaim but a lot of conversation around the gratuitous violence and gory details. The follow up, The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, was also divisive but genuinely felt like some force of good for that case. Next up is, err, Ed Gein – one of the most harrowing and infamous cases ever filled with some of the most nightmarish gory details in crime history. And who is popping in it? Only our pop princess Addison Rae – who we all saw make her debut in the very gory trailer. Here’s what Ryan Murphy has got Addison Rae doing in Monster on Netflix as she faces Ed Gein and plays a real life person who met a sad end.
Addison Rae is playing a suspected victim of Ed Gein
Ed Gein is thought of as a serial killer by many, but officially he only killed two people. Because of the amount of grave robbing he did and the gory specifics the authorities found around his home he was interrogated about killing a lot more. One of those suspected victims was Evelyn Hartley.
Evelyn Hartley was just 16 when she vanished on October 24, 1953, in La Crosse County, Wisconsin. Last seen walking home from a school bus stop, Evelyn was never found, and her disappearance remains one of the state’s most haunting unsolved mysteries. Over the years, her name has been linked to Ed Gein, though authorities never confirmed she was one of his victims.
In fact, Ed Gein was written out of being involved after he passed lie detector tests regarding Evelyn Hartley. There was no trace of her in his house of horrors either. Despite all that being the official verdict, some still believe he was at play.
Monster is clearly leaning into it
“You’re the one that can’t look away.”

It’s frequent that Ed Gein has inspired terrifying horror movies. Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs. The show seems to be leaning right into that, and what we can see of Addison Rae in Monster on Netflix so far is that she gets tortured by Ed Gein and her fate is looking less than happy.
On being a part of the show, Addison Rae said to Tudum “I’m such a big fan of Charlie [Hunnam, playing Gein] and he’s so amazing. And Laurie and Suzanna — I got to work with so many people that I’ve loved their work,” she says. “I’ve never worked on a production that felt so intentional in every piece. And I think that is really inspiring to be around.”
