You would think that anyone who’s won a Golden Globe would guard it with their life.

But hours after winning the best actor award for his performance in Adolescence, Stephen Graham’s highly prized trophy was lost.

We do have to cut the enormously talented actor some slack – it’s not as though he was careless with his accolade. He was in a huge rush to catch a flight, and his suitcase – which had the Golden Globe inside –didn’t make it onto the plane.

Thankfully, his devastating story does have a happy ending, the actor revealed during an appearance on Capital Breakfast radio.

‘I had to go straight from LA the day after to Madrid as I had to be on set the next day. I had 35 minutes to catch the plane.

‘As I came off the plane, a woman took me down the stairs, threw me in a car, and drove me across the runway. But all I’m thinking is, “My case isn’t going to make it.”‘

Stephen, 52, explained that as he stepped off a plane midway through his journey, he pointed out to the woman who had put him in the car that there was ‘no way’ his suitcase was going to make the next portion of his trip.

‘I said, “Excuse me, there’s no way you’re getting my suitcase on this plane if I’m in a car now,” and she was like, “Oh no, don’t worry, we’ll take care of it,”‘ he recalled.

Alas, Stephen was right, and the case didn’t make it onto the flight he was on.

Can you imagine a hefty Golden Globe award, which apparently weighs approximately 3.5kg, making its way to an airport’s lost and found?

Stephen insisted to radio host Jordan North that he didn’t personally leave the award behind, which was in the suitcase alongside his socks, his pants and his toothbrush.

Fortunately for the A Thousand Blows star, he was reunited with his Golden Globe statue when it showed up two days later.

Last year, when Adolescence was released on Netflix, Metro spoke to Stephen about where the inspiration for the series came from, given he co-wrote it with writer Jack Thorne.

He explained that after he heard about ‘another incident of a young boy stabbing a young girl’, the tragedy ‘hurt his heart’.

‘I just wondered, what kind of a society and what kind of a world are we living in where this kind of thing has happened, not once, not twice, three, four, five times? It just really made me curious,’ he said at the time.

Adolescence is available to stream on Netflix.
