Sony ushered in a new era for mirrorless cameras with the introduction of the A7 V. This camera is equipped with a partially stacked sensor that allows you to shoot completely silently. This feature is particularly beneficial for photographers working in quiet environments such as weddings or concerts, where the clicking of the shutter can be distracting.
The A7 V retains the 33-megapixel sensor of the A7 IV, but offers a host of improvements carried over from other models in the Alpha series. This includes a new Bionz XR2 processor with a special AI chip that improves autofocus and object detection. This technology allows the camera to precisely track subjects, which is particularly advantageous for dynamic shots.
Another highlight of the A7 V is the ability to film in oversampled 7K resolution to produce full frame size 4K 60p videos. This fixes one of the biggest problems with the A7 IV, which required a 1.5x crop when recording at 4K 60p. The A7 V only reduces this crop when recording at 4K 120p, making it ideal for slow motion recording.
The camera also offers improved five-axis image stabilization, which can compensate for up to 7.5 stops. This is particularly useful for handheld shooting in low light conditions. Additionally, Sony has improved the battery life, allowing the A7 V to take up to 630 shots with the electronic viewfinder or 750 with the LCD display.
Although the A7 V is more expensive than its predecessor at $2,899, the new features and improved performance justify the extra cost. The camera offers a balanced mix of features for both photographers and videographers, making it an attractive option for enthusiasts and professionals who aren’t willing to pay the high cost of an A1 II model.
