After half-a-century the pits are being put out of the park

AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF) – This work is the end of the road for those who rode downtown and parked.

“I think it’s part of a piece of history that Augusta is going to miss,” said Chris Roberts.

Broad Street’s low down parking areas are being taken away after decades of being the place for many a parker.

“Many a time,” said Tori Zarnow.

Did you like them?

“Yes,” she said.

“Yes, I park there before,” said Rosa Drayton.

“No, it’s hard to get out of,” she said.

They were constructed in the 1970’s so that’s fifty years caring for cars, and that has some raising questions.

“What do you think,” said Michael Inglett.

Well, it’s been fifty years.

“They say the future is here, ain’t it,” said Michael.

For some, their removal is no reason for remorse.

“They should never have been like that in the first place,” said Wesley Fountain.

Why?

“It’s not practical, it’s not easy to get in and out,” he said.

But think of the history of the parking areas.

Maybe after seeing Star Wars on a date, did you park in there?

“I parked in there many a time,” said Billy Badger.

And though it’s been decades, what are they called: parking bays, parking wells or parking pits?

“I didn’t really call them anything. ” said Michael.

“I think I just called them the area in the middle, I don’t think I had a special name,” said Tori.

“Parking pits,” said Rosa.

“They were the pits.”

“Yes,” she said.

“All of the above,” said Billy.

So, whatever you call them, their duty downtown is slipping into history. For some it’s the pits but others, all is well and good.
