AI in everyday business consulting – further training from the KI NRW Future Center at BPM&O

In contrast to Erich Gutenberg’s function-oriented approach to corporate management, the management consultancy BPM&O GmbH has specialized in the development of process-oriented organizations. Through their consulting services and with the help of the Thilo Knuppertz and the team of around 30 experts support the in-house BPM&O Academy Companies help build forward-looking, sustainable and process-oriented corporate management. In addition to consulting topics such as sustainability and SAP transformation, the company uses data-driven models such as process mining in the area of ​​process management1 for modeling and optimizing business processes in process performance analysis2.

In connection with the application of artificial intelligence, BPM&O is primarily concerned with the question of how these statistical models can be enriched with a qualitative assessment of the analysis results using self-learning systems. For this purpose, the Future Center KI NRW was brought in in order to be able to better get to know and realize the various application scenarios of AI for BPM&O’s customers on the one hand, as well as the company’s internal potential on the other.

Accordingly, great attention was paid to the topic of AI during the regular 4-day training event for BMP&O’s own employees, the so-called “Barcamp”, in Grenzau:

The workshop, moderated by the Zukunftszentrum KI NRW, started with a general introductory lecture on the topic of AI, before the participants themselves had the opportunity to gain experience with training an algorithm using ready-made data sets. Using low-code software, newly fed data could be evaluated and visualized by a self-learning system. The workshop not only created a better understanding of the background and how AI works in general, but also worked on the complex topic in an application-oriented way – also through playful input – and thus made it tangible “hands-on”. This enabled the participants to get a concrete idea of ​​the realistic application potential of artificial intelligence in everyday professional and private life and to be able to identify these in a well-founded manner.

The results from the workshop were then combined with those from a parallel workshop, also on a topic related to AI. This meant that all participants in the Barcamp were able to derive concrete operational application scenarios at individual stands from the knowledge they had previously learned in dialogue with each other and with the KI NRW Future Center.

In a further step, Marcel Weghake, as the internal person responsible for AI, collects the large amount of joint suggestions and ideas with the aim of expanding the strategic planning for the appropriate use of the technology in the company with the perspectives gained and incorporating them into the long-term design of the business development process on the subject of artificial intelligence.

Above all, the company should get an idea of ​​how self-learning systems can be used for internal processes and, with a view to customers, how advice can be supported and optimized using AI.

With regard to the internal processes in the company, there was also the question of how knowledge management within the company can benefit from the use of machine learning in order to make a wide range of technical knowledge accessible more quickly and in a structured manner. From this idea, a further, intensive collaboration develops between BPM&O and the Future Center KI NRW, which – based on common Large Language Models (LLM) – involves the development of an in-house chatbot for knowledge management. This project is currently being supervised by another consultant from the KI NRW Future Center.
