Airlink is gearing up for a major expansion next year, one that pairs new horizons with new hardware.
The Southern African carrier will introduce its latest aircraft, the Embraer E195-E2, on a brand-new route linking Johannesburg and Zanzibar from June 2026.
The announcement marks another milestone for Airlink as it strengthens its regional network and invests in a next-generation fleet.
Airlink to connect to the ‘spice island‘
Tickets are now officially on sale for the new service, which will be operated by Airlink’s Embraer E195-E2, the airline’s most advanced jet to date.
With capacity for 136 passengers, the aircraft offers quieter engines, lower fuel burn, and a more spacious cabin layout.
“Zanzibar’s proximity to Johannesburg, Airlink’s main hub, puts the island within reach of our customers based in Gauteng.” Airlink CEO De Villiers Engelbrecht said.

What to expect on the new aircraft
Airlink’s E195-E2 will feature a two-by-two seat layout with no middle seats, ensuring every traveller gets either a window or aisle.
Complimentary meals and refreshments will also be served on board, and passengers benefit from generous baggage allowances, 20kg for economy, 30kg for full-fare economy, plus 15kg for sporting gear.
Zanzibar, long celebrated for its spice trade, white-sand beaches, and labyrinthine Stone Town, continues to attract travellers and investors alike.
The Tanzanian island’s mix of African, Arab, as well as European influences, along with its booming tourism and “blue economy,” has transformed it into one of East Africa’s most dynamic destinations.
Airlink’s new direct flights will make it even easier for South Africans to explore the island’s growing mix of tourism, culture, and commerce.
