One of the biggest airlines in the US has grounded its entire fleet after a software outage.
Alaska Airlines said ‘residual impacts’ were expected to keep disrupting passengers’ travel plans for some time to come after announcing the decision late last night.
All 238 planes operating under the Alaska Airlines brand are built by Boeing.
The grounding also impacts the 45 planes the company operates under its subsidiary Horizon Air brand.
In a post on social media, the airline said: ‘We are currently experiencing an IT outage that’s impacting our operations. We requested a temporary, system-wide ground stop until the issue is resolved.
‘We sincerely apologise to our guests for this inconvenience.
‘If you are travelling tonight, please check the status of your flight before leaving for the airport.’
Alaska Airlines is the fifth-biggest airline in the US by passenger numbers.
Despite the name, it is headquartered in the state of Washington and operates many international flights outside Alaska.
It made international headlines last year when a panel came off one of its Boeing 737 Max 9 planes shortly after it took off from Portland International Airport in Oregon.
The incident in January 2024 resulted in the grounding of many other aircraft by the US Federal Aviation Administration.
