The International Space Station (ISS) has reached a historic milestone: for the first time, all eight docking stations on the station are fully occupied. This remarkable achievement was made possible by the reinstallation of Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus XL cargo spacecraft at the Earth-facing port of the Unity module. In addition to Cygnus XL, two SpaceX Dragons, JAXA’s HTV-X1, two Roscosmos Soyuz crew spacecraft and two Progress cargo ships are docked at the station.
The milestone was reached after the Cygnus XL spacecraft re-docked to the ISS as part of the Northrop Grumman-23 commercial resupply mission for NASA. This movement was coordinated by NASA’s Mission Control Center in Houston to make room for the incoming manned Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft. Cygnus will remain on the ISS until at least March 2026, when it will dispose of up to 11,000 pounds of trash and unneeded cargo.
Meanwhile, the 10-member Expedition 73 crew is busy conducting biological and physics research and preparing for an upcoming crew split. Three new residents have arrived aboard the ISS following the arrival of the Soyuz MS-28 spacecraft. NASA astronaut Chris Williams and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev will remain in space until July 2026, conducting advanced space research.
On December 8, the crew will be reduced to seven members when NASA astronaut Jonny Kim and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky return to Earth. This return marks the end of an eight-month space mission that began in April 2025. The crew made significant advances in space exploration during their mission, expanding understanding of the effects of space life on the human body.
