All the bombshells Danny dropped in 37 minute video about why he quit Rate My Takeaway

Rate My Takeaway has been a huge channel on YouTube and TikTok since mid pandemic, and everyone fell in love with Yorkshire legend Danny Malin as he took his table and chair on the road and tried food at all different places up and down the UK. It has been a format that seemingly never failed, with 750,000 YouTube subscribers and some of the channel’s most popular viral videos getting up to four million views. It’s all come crashing down this week though – as Danny announced he’s immediately quit Rate My Takeaway after the relationship with his editor and producer became “untenable.” The remaining pair released a statement on Danny’s exit – but it’s the 37 minute longer explanation that Danny dropped regarding why he quit Rate My Takeaway that’s got the biggest batch of info. Here’s all the bombshells inside that video and how bad things got.

Danny, Tom and Josh had a three way ownership of the company

For the first time Danny named the people involved with Rate My Takeaway – the cameraman Tom and the editor, Josh. Danny specifies that Tom is in charge and that they wanted to manage Danny as the creator. They offered him to have 50 per cent of the ad revenue or Danny could be an equal part in the company – he chose the latter.

However, Danny says when he signed the contract he never got access to things to do with the business. He says Josh and Tom managed everything, all the finances and logistics and bookings.

He says he wasn’t allowed to choose where to eat or what to have on the menu

In the videos on the channel, it seems like Danny is the one deciding where to go and what to pick when he’s ordering – but in his new YouTube video explaining why he quit Rate My Takeaway he says that Josh and Tom turned down his recommendations of locations and they would tell him what to have to eat. “I wasn’t going in there most of the time off my free choice – I was doing what they wanted me to do,” he says.

He also says “90 per cent of the time, it worked well doing that.”

In 2022 things started to sour

Danny claims things weren’t going well in 2022, where he says “Don’t get me wrong I’m not painting myself out to be a saint in this because I can be as mardy as anyone. Sometimes I wouldn’t want to film and sometimes I’d be too tired.”

Danny claims he was locked out of everything three hours after handing in his notice

He says that in the first five hours of resigning he was locked out of the Rate My Takeaway email and then their bank accounts were cleared with the money split between the three of them. He says the van was also taken out of their secure lockup and claims he was told by Tom that he’s not telling Danny where the van is.

Danny said in his notice he was willing to film 12 episodes and have the last one as “a farewell episode”. This never ended up happening because Danny says the actions of Tom and Josh during this meant making those episodes wouldn’t be appropriate.

One time, things escalated

Danny claims in one argument where Tom tried to refer back to a contract, Danny got upset and walked out and then Tom followed him outside – where Danny claims Tom threatened “physical aggression towards me”.

He says “We ended up being escorted out from this shopping centre in different directions.” He then claims Tom “bombarded him with phone calls”. Danny says that he suffers “trauma” every time he argued with Tom which he told Tom.

Danny says the relationship was irretrievable

Whilst he said up until recently he had a good relationship with Josh over Tom, Danny says that he recently had also fell out with Josh too because of various factors. He said that on August bank holiday Monday they had a big argument. “I’ve just got to a point where I worked and no longer enjoyed my job,” Danny says. “Everything we did was orchestrated by them. I was the face of it, I was the character. I only just got to see the bank account in October last year.”

He says the reason Danny quit Rate My Takeaway was because he was so anxious over all the arguing that he was concerned if they carried on it would do harm to his health.

What have Josh and Tom said about it all?

In a statement after Danny first announced he’d quit Rate My Takeaway, Tom and Josh said in a statement from the company channel: The statement says “But we also need to be honest: we’ve asked him multiple times to film a farewell video so things could be explained properly to the audience but chose not to and when we suggested sitting down together in the same room and filming both sides for you all, he refused. We had hoped for that closure as a team, but sadly it hasn’t been possible.

“The truth is, this whole situation has left us feeling a bit lost. And the hardest part is that, because we don’t have the confidence to speak on camera ourselves, it probably looks even worse from the outside. That’s why we’ve chosen to write all of this instead it’s the only way we feel we can be fully honest and clear with you.

“As for what happens next honestly, we don’t know right now. And that’s okay. Our main aim here is simply to make sure the past is understood clearly.  At the heart of it, we’re just sad it’s ended this way. We’ve poured years into Rate My Takeaway, and it hurts to feel like people might see us in the wrong light. Whatever anyone chooses to believe, the truth is that we’ve always done our best for the channel, for Danny, and for the amazing community that grew around it.”

Tom has since responded to the allegations further, telling Leeds Live “I just want to send a message to the fans, don’t believe everything on face value. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes and I’m getting a lot of grief and I’ve done nothing wrong.

“I’ve never done anything wrong. I’ve never been violent towards Danny. I’ve never raised my voice towards Danny.” Tom also refutes the van saga, saying that whilst Danny is registered keeper of the vehicle it’s Tom’s company that he claims is the owner of it.
