He Day of the Dead in Mexico is a tradition full of life and symbolism where, mainly, one searches honor the legacy of loved ones who are not with us today. That memory, furthermore, goes from generation to generationso that the memory of that person is always present.
Although it is a tradition rooted in Mexican culture, new generations have adopted other traditions such as Halloweenopening the controversy about how these days intended for the faithful deceased should be celebrated, which, in other traditions, has to do with harvest times.
For the little ones in the house, costumes and sweets may be a moment of joy, but that does not have to distance them from the Mexican essence of remembering loved ones who have gone to the afterlife. That is why here we bring a selection of animated movies for children to learn about the Day of the Dead:
“The Legend of Nahuala” (2007)
The first recommendation is not specifically Day of the Deadbut yes of the multiple legends that are part of the oral tradition of Mexico and that began with “The legend of the Nahuala”in charge of Animex.

This saga, which continues with titles like “The Legend of La Llorona”, “The Mummies of Guanajuato”, “The Chupacabra” y “The Black Charro”follow Leonardo San Juanor simply Leo; an orphaned child who visits –accompanied by Teodora Villavicencio– various towns in Mexico, to see their legends turned into realities.
The saga, by Animex –de Ricardo Arnaiz-; is one of the first Mexican animation productions that was successful at the box office, thanks to the fact that it managed to attract the attention of both children and adults, with its fun stories which you can follow through Netflixwhich also has an animated series that expands the traditions of various regions of Mexico, showing them in a fun way to the little ones in the house.
“The Book of Life” (2014)
Con Diego Luna, Sandra Echeverría, José Gilberto Vilchis and Kate del Castillo in it latin dubbing; follows the story of Manolo (Luna), María (Sandra) and Joaquín (Vilchis), three friends who over time form a love triangle that will test their amistad.
The story is narrated by Catrina (Kate)which highlights the values of family unity, but above all the importance of being true to oneself and one’s ideas. Although it is a film with songs in English, a curious fact about it is that Diego Luna took singing classes to be able to perform the songs himself, in order to show his children that, with dedication, you can do a good job.
This film also has Guillermo del Toro as producersomething that can be noticed in the animation based on puppets and the peculiarity of the characters.

Coco (2017)
This original Disney film revisits the Day of the Dead and the family unionas well as the importance of not forgetting loved ones, so that their memory remains alive.
The animated film follows Miguelwho has the dream of become a musician, despite the fact that her family opposes it because her great-grandmother’s mother had to raise her alone after allegedly being abandoned by her husband, who left home to pursue his musical aspirations.


With the voice of Gael García Bernal like Hector and Anthony Gonzalez like Miguel; This American film presents very colorful Mexican traditionscaptivating both children and adults with his songs. The film is available through Disney+.
”Day of the Dead” (2019)
The film had to delay its release for two years, so as not to compete at the box office with Disney’s “Coco” film.
“Day of the Dead”, of mexican animation; follow the story of Salma, a 16 year old teenagers that he does not know the whereabouts or identity of his parents. Since she was little she has investigated it without successuntil one day Salma and her friends discover a clue that takes them down a path full of adventures, ghosts, skulls and a mysterious man to the underworld.


The film, available through Amazon Premiume, features the voices of Alan Estrada y Fernanda Castillo.
