Another Ellis Park? DHL Stadium’s priciest Springboks tix unsold

Cape Town’s DHL Stadium is expected to mimic the scenes of the “empty” Ellis Park as the Springboks play against the Wallabies again this weekend, according to rugby fans. Many have blamed the pricey tickets, which cost up to R4 000 each, which are still on sale.

The rival countries will face off for the second time on Saturday, 23 August, as part of the Rugby Championship tournament.

SPRINGBOK FANS UNHAPPY OVER PRICEY DHL STADIUM TICKETS

On TikTok, many Springbok fans have bemoaned the scores of unaffordable tickets still on sale for the game against the Wallabies at the DHL Stadium on Saturday.

Currently, a large percentage of tickets priced between R1750 and R3500 are still available.

TikTok user @jaydencollison1said: “It’s not even close to being sold out. Having tickets that cost this much in Cyril’s economy is a disgrace.

“You are immediately excluding the middle and lower income households. There is no ticket under R1 500 available, which again is still a stupid amount of money.

He added: “It is incredibly sad that the children in these households who look up to [the Springboks] as heroes will never have a chance to watch them play”.

‘NEVER GOING TO PAY THAT’

CapeTalk’s John Maytham also joined critics of the “overpriced” Springbok tickets on sale for the game at the DHL Stadium.

Speaking during his show this week, the radio veteran said: “I’m not prepared to pay R4,000 to watch a game of rugby when I can sit on my sofa in the comfort of my home with access to my well-stocked fridge and pantry… all the angles on a big HDTV.”

“I’ll have to go to Town, find parking, struggle through the crowds, maybe get a ticket, maybe get my car scratched… all of those things that are potentially negative add-ons to the rugby-going experience.

“I’d go for R1,250… I’m prepared to go through that because there’s nothing quite like being at the stadium when your team is playing. But at R4,000…never gonna pay that… not for a rugby game.”

WHY ARE CAPE TOWN PRICES SO HIGH?

It’s not the first time Springbok fans have complained about the price of test match tickets at the DHL Stadium.

But why are they so expensive?

According to stadium management, this is because of the venues…

  • Modern, world-class features
  • Limited availability and high demand
  • Cape Town is being hailed as a top tourist destination
