Another RYOBI Recall Resurfaces Amid Pressure Washer Explosions

Months before RYOBI issued a major recall for two of its pressure washers that exploded on dozens of owners, it had also issued a recall for its popular lawnmowers. And some customers have just stumbled upon the news.

RYOBI customers have recently taken to social media to share the fire hazard associated with the 40-Volt Brushless 21-inch Cordless Walk-Behind Mowers. The recall was announced on Feb. 6 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Still, news of the recall recently resurfaced after RYOBI recalled two of its popular pressure washers — affecting more than 700,000 units — on Aug. 28.

These are the affected models

According to RYOBI, the recall only includes model numbers RY401014BTLUS, RY401014US, RY401140US, RY401015BTLUS, RY401015US, RY401150US, RY401140US-Y, RY401150US-Y, RY401020, and RY401200 with the following serial numbers: KC21032D010001 – KC21327N999999.

The model and serial numbers can be found on the mowers inside the green mower housing.

The mowers are described as having a black cutting deck with gray top housing, along with a black bag with “RYOBI” printed on it.

Why were they recalled?

RYOBI’s 40-Volt Brushless 21-inch Cordless Walk-Behind Mowers were recalled because some “have a push-on connector inside the powerhead that can overheat, posing a fire hazard.”

According to RYOBI, about 217,500 were sold nationwide, along with 28,400 in Canada.

The recall comes after 97 reports of overheating while the mower was in use, including five reports of fires. Two minor burn injuries have been reported.

What to do next

RYOBI customers should immediately stop using the recalled mower and contact TTI Outdoor Power Equipment Inc. (TTI) for instructions on how to disable the recalled mower and receive a free replacement 21-inch walk-behind mower.

The lawnmowers in question were sold at The Home Depot and Direct Tools Factory Outlet stores nationwide and online, from February 2021 to January 2025.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the hedge trimmer blade can unexpectedly activate after pressing just the safety or trigger control individually rather than engaging the safety and trigger controls simultaneously, posing a laceration hazard.
