Anthony Hopkins spoke openly about the fact that he has been separated from his eldest daughter, Abigail, aged 57, for 20 years, as a result of his relationship with his first wife, Petronella Barker.
In an interview with “The New York Times”, the actor revealed that his current wife, Stella, tried to promote a meeting between father and daughter, without success. “He invited her to visit us. There was no response,” he said. “That’s fine with me. I wish you the best.”
“If you want to spend the rest of your life with resentment, that’s fine. I could do the same, but that would be death; it’s not living. We have to realize that we are imperfect. We are not saints, we are all sinners. We do the best we can. Life is hard.”
“Sometimes people get hurt,” he continued. “Sometimes we get hurt. But we can’t live like that. We have to say: ‘get over it.’ If you don’t succeed, that’s okay; I won’t judge. I did what I could, that’s all I have to say.”
Anthony Hopkins is currently promoting his autobiography, “We Did Ok, Kid”, where he talks about Abigail and Petronella: to the “New York Times”, the actor assured that he wants his daughter to read the book, adding that he does not want to continue dwelling on the past so as “not to hurt her”.
