António José Seguro defends “united country” to solve problems

Presidential candidate António José Seguro stated that the country needs to be united so that it can “ambitiously solve” its problems, inviting democrats, humanists and progressives to join his candidacy.

“I came to unite and I need to unite the best that our country has, which is its people. We need a President who knows how to listen and mobilize. Unity is fundamental so that Portugal can solve its problems with ambition”, said this Saturday António José Seguro, in Faro.

The candidate for President of the Republic spoke to journalists on the sidelines of a visit to the Faro Municipal Market, the district where he began a tour of the country this Saturday, with the theme “The future is built with everyone”, to collect opinions and speak to the Portuguese.

According to António José Seguro, the trip to Portugal, which will last a month, aims to “listen to the Portuguese, because they have many concerns and many problems and so that they feel that there is a candidate, a person who wants to serve the country in the Presidency of the Republic and who always wants to be at the side of the Portuguese”

“This is not just a pre-campaign initiative. It is an initiative that I want to have from Belém. I said when presenting my candidacy that I would listen to the State Council several times and whenever necessary, but I also want to listen to the people’s advice at all times”, he said.

The candidate and former general secretary of the PS highlighted that his “role is not just to be a President who stays in a closed palace, but who is with the people listening to people and who can also inspire them”.

The country, he said, needs to “have a purpose”, assuming that its goal is for Portugal “to be a country of excellence and a fair country”.

“Towards this goal, we all have to make a contribution. We need to draw on the best that the Portuguese have and the Portuguese have a lot of fantastic things”, he highlighted.

Asked about André Ventura’s statements, who argued that Portugal needed “three Salazars”, Seguro replied that if “with one it was already the delay it was, imagine with three the delay it wouldn’t be”.

“The country does not need dictators, the country needs democratic, efficient, transparent institutions that fight corruption”, he noted.

The presidential candidate revealed that he chose to start his tour of the country in the Algarve, because “95 percent of the territory is made up of sea, hence the need to get to know it better”.

“We have to know it well and we have to explore it better, because we have a huge opportunity to create wealth and jobs with better quality and above all with better pay”, he concluded.

In the Algarve, Seguro will meet today with mayors in São Brás de Alportel, where he will also participate in an initiative called “Conversation with the Future — Territorial Cohesion and Interior Development”.

The former general secretary of the PS then heads to Olhão, where he will be present at the opening session of the senior university’s academic year.

Still in Olhão, Seguro will visit a seaweed processing unit for cosmetic and food purposes, and return to Faro to meet with representatives of the Culatra Island Association, ending the day with a visit to the Feira de Santa Iria.
