Applications open for Two Oceans Aquarium’s volunteer course

Calling all ocean lovers: the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town has opened applications for volunteers.

Opening its doors in 1995, the aquarium offers local and international visitors a stunning look into the marine life that inhabits our shores, as well as the far reaches of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

Now, you have the opportunity to expand your knowledge about these sea creatures and share them with others!

TWO OCEANS AQUARIUM WELCOMES ALL ADULT VOLUNTEERS

Two Oceans Aquarium is welcoming “ocean-minded individuals” aged 18 and over to enrol in their adult volunteer course, according to a news post on their website.

“As a volunteer, you’ll help us connect visitors to the ocean and the incredible creatures that call it home,” the post reads.

“Through this programme, you’ll be introduced to the fascinating lives of marine animals such as sea stars, sea urchins, anemones and the rich diversity of seaweeds that thrive along our shoreline.

Applicants are not required to have any formal qualifications or prior experience with marine life. Rather, the course is aimed at those who have a passion for the sea and an equally strong desire to learn.

The course, combining theory and practical elements, takes place every Saturday from 11 October until 15 November 2025 at the aquarium.

Marine science educators from the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation will oversee the course.

These educators will teach you in-depth about various topics – including about the marine life that inhabits South African shores – as well as guide you through “hands-on practical sessions and weekly assessments.”

BEGIN YOUR VOLUNTEERING JOURNEY AT THE TWO OCEANS AQUARIUM

Once you have successfully completed the course, you can begin your volunteering journey at the aquarium.

You will be assigned as a front-of-house volunteer, whereby you will interact with visitors, answer their questions and impart your knowledge of marine life – either those found in the aquarium or out in the ocean – thus ensuring an enriching experience for everyone.

If you wish to move onto more specialised areas, like assisting with penguin care, you must complete at least 45 hours of front-of-house volunteering.
