Atlantic Seaboard reeling after two sudden, unrelated deaths

The Atlantic Seaboard community are mourning the loss of two men – a cyclist and a runner – who passed away from suspected heart attacks.

On Sunday morning, well-known Camps Bay resident Byron Herbert collapsed while cycling along Victoria Road.

Despite efforts from bystanders and emergency responders, he could not be saved.

Heartfelt tributes have since flooded social media, with many remembering Herbert not only for his love of the outdoors but also for his vocal activism around water quality along the Atlantic Seaboard.

Byron ‘Buzzie’ Herbert commissioned and co-produced our original ‘Bay of Sewage’ video which kickstarted much of today’s public awareness around Cape Town’s three effectively-raw-sewage marine outfalls,” wrote a post.

For him, we will proudly keep the flag flying, and honour and continue his legacy of striving for greater marine environmental awareness.”

Another Atlantic Seaboard local dies while exercising

On Monday morning, a runner collapsed on High Level Road in Sea Point, reportedly also from a suspected cardiac arrest. His identity had not yet been confirmed by authorities at the time of publication.

“All I know is that [the runner] was a local Sea Point resident,” Ward Councillor Nicola Jowell told The South African.

“It is very tragic, especially at this time of year when family comes together, for the families to be greeted with this very sad news,” she added, while thanking bystanders and emergency services for their help in both incidents.

“I do send my condolences to all friends and families of the two deceased men.”
