HEPHZIBAH, Ga (WJBF) – The city of Augusta hoping to help those of you who say you need help paying rent.
Hundreds at the Robert Howard Community Center hope their applications get approved to help with rent, utilities and other housing related needs.
Due to the large number of applicants, the city has had to limit the intake locations and is no longer taking walk-ins at the main office or online.
One person I spoke with waited in line for almost 4 hours but says she appreciates what the city is doing.
“It’s good that they’re helping people with their bills and rent, and you know with the kids starting back at school its good because they need the TV on, they need the lights on, they got to have their food in the refrigerator,” said Lina Wright.
Another person I spoke with had also been waiting in line for hours but she was not as satisified with the program.
“We all need help, and the stipulations is like it’s changing constantly. One minute you need all the social security cards, then you need your lease then you need so many check stubs, and then they’re acting like they don’t want to help people who just need help with their light bill,” Venicia Campfield said.
Alex Smith is new to Augusta and just retired from the military. He told me it’s wonderful to see the city helping people with their necessities.
“It’s great that they have them because a lot of people do need help. With the economy up and down, it’s a great thing and it’s been a great help with me recently retiring, I’ll accept all help and assistance,” said Smith.
