Augusta University celebrates opening of State-of-the-Art Sports Performance Center

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF)- Augusta University will host a ribbon cutting for the new Alvin & Yvette Harris Sports Performance Center.

This new space allows student-athletes to enhance their performance on the court and on the playing field.

Now prior to this new sports performance center, AU athletes would have to share a workout space in a smaller weight room.

But now the athletes have a brand new modern sports performance center that is more than four thousand square feet.

After a six month hiring search, AU then hired a full-time strength coach to train these athletes.

This sports performance center has all new equipment to help the athletes excel.

“We got a lot of racks in there, a lot of specialized equipment. We’re talking about new technology to bring in the space to really see, I guess let us follow the training of our student athletes and see where they were and where they’re going and how do we get them there. It’s amazing to see all the data and technology inspired opportunities we have in this space,” said Athletic Director, Ryan Erlacher.

He also said he’s seen substantial improvements in the athlete’s competition.

“I guess the training side of what he does is so specialized. I’ve seen them do things that they’ve never seen, they’ve never been encountered before. And really seeing the changes in the competitive level, seeing how they’re competing on the court, on the field, I think a lot of it has to do with the work, the great work they’re putting in on the weight room.”

The ribbon cutting will take place at 4:30pm, at Christenberry Fieldhouse on the Forest Hills Campus.
