Premier League lift little-known broadcasting blackout in major boost for football fans

PREMIER LEAGUE chiefs have axed a little-known broadcasting rule ahead of next season.

There have been restrictions in place to stop youth-team matches being shown at the same time as senior top-flight games.

But that blackout has reportedly been lifted for the 2025/26 campaign.

Under-21 games in the Premier League 2 can now be live streamed even if they clash with fixtures on Sky Sports or TNT Sports.

Official club channels are ready to “take the lead” in showing the action.

But there are rumours of a TV deal in the coming years should viewing figures be significant.

The rule change is a major boost for football fans up and down the country – especially Manchester United supporters.

Viewers have long complained about MUTV not showing enough youth-team fixtures live.

Just 14 of 35 Under-21 games were shown last season and just eight of those were Premier League 2 clashes.

Manchester Evening News report that the in-house channel was impacted by Sir Jim Ratcliffe‘s brutal job cuts.

Premier League fans are set to deal with another year of the 3pm blackout, which prevents games being broadcast live at that time to protect attendances

Though reports suggest the measure could be axed when the current TV deal expires at the end of the 2028/29 season.

His new co-stars were visibly stunned by the revelation and viewers at home rushed to comment.

Trump doesn’t rule out arresting California Gov Gavin Newsom over LA riot chaos and says he had to save city from mob

DONALD Trump refused to rule out arresting California Governor Gavin Newsom over his handling of the Los Angeles riots.

The pair have been trading blows since Newsom slammed Trump’s decision to send federal troops into the city to quell immigration raid rioters.

Trump has sent around 4,000 of the National Guard and 700 Marines into LA, where they have clashed violently with protesting mobs and been given to make arrests

The Governor accused Trump of manufacturing the flare-ups, saying his actions were “akin to authoritarian regimes” – and was dismissed as “incompetent” in return.

He vowed his state is “suing Donald Trump” for “creating fear and terror to […] violate the US constitution”.

Trump has previously toyed with the idea of arresting Newsom, and refused to rule it out in an interview with the New York Post.

Trump’s border czar Tom Homan had warned that anyone, including public officials, would be arrested if they obstructed federal law enforcement.

On Sunday, Newsom goaded Trump over the threats, saying in a MSNBC interview: “Come after me, arrest me. Let’s just get it over with, tough guy.”

Asked directly if he is going to arrest and charge Gavin Newsom, Trump said: “Well, he’s not doing a good job.

“In theory you could, I guess. It’s almost like a dissipation of duties. Nobody’s ever seen anything like it.”

Before Wednesday’s interview, Newsom shared his thoughts on the arrest threats.

He said: “The President of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting Governor.

“This is a day I hoped I would never see in America. I don’t care if you’re a Democrat or a Republican this is a line we cannot cross as a nation this is an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism.”

Trump follow up with a brutal takedown of Newsom’s record in office – which included blaming him for the devastating wild fires that ravaged parts of LA in January.

Trump said: “First he had his wildfires that burned down half the place […] I told them water, get the water from the pacific north west […] I got the water to go down.

“They were using environmental as a reason not to give water. They were protecting a certain type of fish – which by the way has not done well.

“He should have done it [redirected the water supply] in my first term. You wouldn’t have had the fires.”

Interviewer Miranda Devine then asked about a much-disputed phone call between Trump and Newsom – with each swearing to a different version of events.

The President claimed he rang to discuss sending in National Guardsmen – but Newsom branded him a “stone-cold liar”.

Newsom insists he “kept trying to bring up” the situation in LA, but that Trump veered onto other subjects.

However, Trump doubled down today and said: “Of course I did [talk about it]. The phone call was to deploy the troops.

“I said: ‘You’re city is burning down, your state is in bad trouble.’

“All I want is him to do a good job […] he’s doing a poor job.”

In an effort to checkmate Newsom, Trump brandished a screenshot showing a 16-minute call between the two at 1:23am on June 7.

Newsom does not dispute that the call happened – but maintains that Trump “never once brought up the National Guard”.

Trump landed other personal jibes, mocking the California High-Speed Rail project which has run over budget and claiming that, without him, Newsom “wouldn’t have LA”.

He said: “Between the fires and the riots, there would be nothing left. You have a governor that’s incompetent, a mayor that’s highly incompetent.”

FIFA World Cup to be guarded by ICE and DHS agents as fans are warned to expect ‘suited and booted’ security

FIFA Club World Cup will be guarded by “suited and booted” ICE and DHS agents, officials have warned.

The mammoth event’s opening ceremony takes place at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday.

The winning side will earn up to $125 million[/caption]

The countdown is officially on until the FIFA Club World Cup kicks off, with a curtain-raiser between Inter Miami and a team from Egypt, Al Ahly.

The Department of Homeland Security has revealed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) personnel will provide security at the game.

On its Facebook account, CBP posted last week: “Let the games begin.

“The first #FIFAClubWorldCup games start on June 14th in Miami, FL at the Hard Rock Stadium.

“CBP will be suited and booted and ready to provide security for the first round of games. #CBPxFIFA #FootballUnitesTheWorld.”

The post has since been deleted.

However, NBC said the post had prompted questions about whether the presence of federal agents was “just part of the overall security team, which is normal for a big event?”

This follows demonstrations nationwide, including Dallas and Austin in Texas, and Chicago and New York, after federal immigration raids arrested dozens of workers in Los Angeles.

It also comes as Donald Trump continues his huge immigration crackdown and travel ban.

And Vice President JD Vance last month warned World Cup travellers not to overstay their welcome.

The broadcaster said it was not clear whether the agents will also be checking papers and detaining fans arriving for the game.

FIFA today held a press conference to publicise the Club World Cup – the winning side of which will earn up to $125 million.

NBC noted, “It’s obvious that Fifa would rather focus on the games instead of outside issues.”

FIFA president Gianni Infantino urged fans to buy tickets despite concerns about the presence of federal agents.

He told fans, “Be part of history, football is such an important sport all over the world. we’ll have billions of people watching this from home who would love to come and attend.”

BOOSTING SECURITY

Infantino was asked whether he had any concerns about ICE and border officials being present at the games.

He replied, “No I don’t have any concerns on anything in the sense that we are very attentive on any security questions.

“Most important for us is to guarantee security for our fans who will come to the games, this is our priority.”

The station stressed that it is normal for local police to partner with federal counterparts and law enforcement agents to provide security at big events.

The broadcaster said it had spoken to ICE agents – who had confirmed its officials will be at the games – to provide security.

NBC – citing ICE advice – told viewers intending on attending games that all non-American citizens need to carry proof of their legal status.

This is particularly vital after the debacle last year, when 7,000 unticketed supporters broke into the Copa America final.

Some fans climbed over fences, while others were incredibly seen trying to enter via a ventilation system at the Hard Rock Stadium.

More on the Club World Cup 2025

  • The Club World Cup 2025 will begin on Sunday, June 15, in the UK and Saturday, June 14, in the US.
  • The tournament will run until Sunday, July 13.
  • It is being held across 12 different cities and stadiums in the United States.
  • The whole tournament will be broadcast by DAZN in the UK and US.
  • Matches can be watched on DAZN TV or via the website/app.
  • In the UK, Channel 5 will also air select games on terrestrial TV.

But, Thomas Kennedy of the Florida Immigrant Coalition said the federal agents’ now-deleted social media warning had caused confusion.

He said, “The messaging that CBP is using is a bit cryptic.

“It’s sort of alluding that people should have their paperwork in order to attend the games.

“It creates an environment where people are less likely to come watch the games because of just sheer intimidation.”

When asked about the security arrangement, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said, “We’re here to make sure people are safe, that’s our focus, to work with all of the law enforcement personnel, our safety personnel, and make sure they have a seamless experience.”

Primark opening new type of store in Britain for first time and shoppers will be thrilled

PRIMARK is set to open a brand new type of store just in time for summer.

The bargain retailer is due to bring a new model of shop to the UK high street in the coming months.

The new store will feature an extensive range of homeware essentials[/caption]

A new 11,900 sq ft, two floor shop is set to open in Manchester at the Trafford Palazzo.

It will be the first ever dedicated Primark Home store to open in the UK.

Primark have said the shop will bring together “the best of Primark’s interiors offering under one roof.”

It will host an expanded range of homeware and lifestyle essentials for Manchester shoppers to browse and buy.

The move comes following the firms first ever dedicated Primark Home store was opened in Belfast earlier this year.

The new location in Manchester will also include a dedicated travel shop to help customers get holiday-ready.

Paul Baldwin, Trading Director for Home at Primark said: “Our mission is simple: to make it easy for everyone to create a home they love, without breaking the bank.

“Customer reaction to our first Primark Home store in Belfast has been really positive, and we can’t wait to bring this exciting new concept to Great Britain later this summer.

“Homes have become more than just places to live, they’re an extension of our personalities, so whether it’s soft furnishings, statement tableware, or smart storage solutions you’re after, our range has something for every style and budget.”

An exact date for the stores opening hasn’t been given by the retailer yet but it is expected to come this summer.

The new store will stock all manner of high-quality essentials like cotton bedding and towels, soft furnishings, small furniture and quirky ceramics.

Trafford Palazzo is already home to one Primark location with the new store adding to the retailers offering on the site.

Primark stores usually stock a full range of goods from clothes, to home to holiday essentials.

For the first time ever Primark will now stock just homeware in a store.

The fashion retailer currently employs over 80,000 people internationally.

Primark is known for its budget options and huge range, offering an extensive selection of goods at a low price.

The retailer boasts over 460 stores globally with the new Primark Home in Manchester boosting this number further.

According to the retailer: “Primark Home combines style, comfort and value to help shoppers make a house a home.”

Thrilled shoppers took to social media to show their excitement for the new stores launch.

One user said: “You’ve got some great home stuff please make this department bigger and give us trolleys.”

Another commented: “I need one of everything, and two cushions.”

A third replied: “We need this store in Kalamazoo Michigan.”

Why Primark is great for looking expensive on a budget

By Clemmie Feildsend, Fabulous Fashion Editor

AS someone who’s no stranger to grabbing a last-minute outfit from Primark for a night out, it’s about time that celebrities started catching on too.

For as long as I’ve been heading out, Primark has been my go-to for those “I have nothing to wear” moments, rushing in at the last minute to find something perfect.

And I’m definitely not alone – on any Friday or Saturday night, you’ll find plenty of shoppers doing the same thing, right before closing time.

But no matter what, Primark always delivers.

Now, Rita Ora is leading the charge, showing that you can snag a designer-worthy look without spending a fortune at high-end stores.

While Rita’s not rushing in last minute for a red carpet outfit, she’s proving you can achieve the same high-impact style for much less.

Looking stunning in her tailored suit alongside her mum Vera, Rita fit right in among the other A-listers dripping in Prada, Dior, and Victoria Beckham – if anything, she looked even better than some of the guests at The Fashion Awards.

With Myleene Klass and Roxy Horner already jumping on the Primark bandwagon, I’m sure more stars will be following suit soon enough.

How Beach Boys ‘genius’ Brian Wilson brought sun-kissed California to world with some of the greatest songs ever made

GOD Only Knows how Brian Wilson created pop’s most sublime tunes.

The death of The Beach Boys icon at 82 marks the passing of one of the few artists who genuinely deserved to be called a “genius”.

Brian first found fame as a member of The Beach Boys[/caption]

Brian was a musical genius, as showcased on The Beach Boys’ 1966 album Pet Sounds

He was the composer, performer and producer Sir Paul McCartney looked up to.

Despite penning all those era-defining songs with John Lennon in The Beatles, Macca placed God Only Knows above them all — and admitted that “it reduces me to tears every time I hear it”.

He performed the song with Brian in 2002 and, as you won’t be surprised to hear, “broke down” during the sound check.

Among Brian’s other best known songs, mainly co-writes, were Good Vibrations, Surfin’ USA, I Get Around and Wouldn’t It be Nice.

Last night, his children said in a statement: “We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away.

“We are at a loss for words right now. We realise that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love & Mercy.”

His daughter Daria added: “I don’t know what to say. I loved him in ways I can’t explain. He was my dad.”

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards posted “Rest In Peace” with an extract about Brian from his memoir, and bandmate Ronnie Wood said he was “in mourning”.

John Lennon’s son Sean Ono Lennon described the loss of “our American Mozart”.

And Nancy Sinatra said: “His cherished music will live forever as he travels through the Universe and beyond.

“God bless you, sweet Brian.

“One of the biggest thrills of my life was singing ‘California Girls’ with Brian.”

Brian was born in Inglewood, southern California, in 1942, the first son of Audree and Murry Wilson.

From a very early age, he was recognised for his musical gifts.

He had perfect pitch and could sing back phrases sung to him as a baby.

Brian had a difficult relationship with his dad.

He, along with his siblings, suffered psychological and physical abuse by their father.

The singer’s 2016 memoir, I am Brian Wilson, paints Murry as “violent” and “cruel”, but also suggests that some claims against him were exaggerated or unfounded.

Murry had remembered how, after hearing only a few verses of The Caissons Go Rolling Along, Brian, then an infant, was able to reproduce the tune.

At 12, the Wilson family acquired an upright piano, which Brian spent hours and hours teaching himself to play.

He and his younger brothers, Carl and Dennis, got into the pop sounds of the day — R&B, rock ’n’ roll and doo-wop.

Despite being partly deaf in one ear, Brian joined Carl and their cousin Mike Love to form a high school group, Carl and the Passions, later bringing in Dennis and Al Jardine to form the Pendletones.

Brian co-wrote the group’s first song, Surfin’, which, in turn, inspired their record label to change their name to The Beach Boys.

The rest, as they say, is history,

As the chief inspirational force, he brought the sun-kissed Californian lifestyle — surfing, fast cars and parties — to a world emerging from post-war austerity into the Swinging Sixties.

The band had adopted a clean-cut, college-boy image, sang about dreamy California Girls and be- came the West Coast’s answer to The Beatles.

Brian married his first wife, Marilyn, in 1964 and marital strains were to influence the lyrical direction of his masterpiece, The Beach Boys’ eleventh album, Pet Sounds.

Later that year, Brian had suffered a panic attack on a flight just hours after appearing on TV show Shindig!

This prompted him to give up live appearances to concentrate on writing and production. His giant artistic strides began.

It’s also worth noting that this was the era of psychedelic drugs, notably LSD, and Brian was one of countless musicians to try them out, curious about their effect on songwriting.

So came a huge change of tack in his career, leading to his rare mastery of instrumentation, harmony and recording technology.

In his later years, Wilson was a man of few words who let his music do the talking.

‘A SPIRITUAL RECORD’

He struggled with mental illness and found interviews uncomfortable.

But, during the times I met him, I found him polite and gracious and steadfastly sincere.

In 2016, during a promotional visit to London, I asked Wilson to describe his happiest memory of making Pet Sounds — to some, the greatest album of all time.

“Well, I loved making God Only Knows with my brother Carl. He had a good voice,” he replied, fifty years after its release.

It was his understated but heartfelt way of paying tribute to his youngest sibling, blessed with an angelic voice, who had died from cancer in 1998.

He told me he had been striving to “make a choir, a nice choir” with Pet Sounds.

Through Carl and the rest of the group’s glorious lead and harmony singing, he succeeded.

Brian was responsible for the sweeping symphonic arrangements and wall-of-sound production that doffed a hat to Phil Spector’s girl group work — but he took it to whole new places.

He gave the album weird and wonderful sound effects — bicycle bells, trains, Hawaiian strings, Coke cans and barking dogs among them.

“And we had little toy instruments,” recalled Brian.

“We just thought we’d put them in there for the kids. I knew it would be a very special album,” he continued, before exclaiming, “I just knew it!”.

Wilson with Paul McCartney whose favourite son was God Only Knows[/caption]

In his memoir, I Am Brian Wilson, he elaborated further: “I love the whole Pet Sounds record.

“I got a full vision out of it in the studio.

“After that, I said to myself that I had completed the greatest album I will ever produce.

“It was a spiritual record. When I was making it, I looked around at the musicians and the singers and I could see their halos.”

He also talked about the impact of The Beatles: “I met Paul McCartney later in the Sixties, in a studio. I was almost always in a studio back then.

“We had a little chat about music.

“Everyone knows now that God Only Knows was Paul’s favourite song — not only his favourite Beach Boys song, but one of his favourite songs, period.

“It’s the kind of thing people write in liner notes and say on talk shows.

“When people read it, they kind of look at that sentence and keep going.

“But think about how much it mattered to me when I first heard it.

“I was the person who wrote God Only Knows and here was another person — the person who wrote Yesterday and And I Love Her and so many other songs — saying it was his favourite.

“It really blew my mind. He wasn’t the only Beatle who felt that way.

“John Lennon called me after Pet Sounds — phoned me up, I think the British say — to tell me how much he loved the record.”

I’m in a better frame of mind these days. It feels great . . . it’s like I see some light. Things make sense to me again

Brian Wilson

It’s sad to think that Wilson, this architect of the band’s unique sunlit sound, went on to suffer years in the darkness in the Seventies and Eighties.

Mental illness allied to drug abuse left Brian lost in a world of his own from which few believed he would return.

But his rehabilitation began in 1988 with his self-titled first solo album.

It continued with I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times (1995), Orange Crate Art (1995 with long-time collaborator Van Dyke Parks), Imagination (1998) and Gettin’ In Over My Head (2004).

That same year, he finally realised his lost masterpiece SMiLE.

“That was amazing,” Brian told me.

“I never ever imagined it coming out until my manager and (second) wife (Melinda) said: ‘You ought to try to finish it.’”

He also released a Pet Sounds Live album, but I asked whether he would consider playing the album again in its entirety in concert.

“I don’t think we’ll be doing that again,” he said with quite alarming frankness.

“We just thought we drove it into the ground.”

Last year, it was revealed Brian was suffering from dementia.

A conservatorship was awarded to his family, his publicist and manager after Melinda, his wife of 29 years, had died.

At the time of her passing, Brian said, “Melinda was more than my wife. She was my saviour.

“She gave me the emotional security. I needed to have a career.

“She encouraged me to make the music that was closest to my heart.

“She was my anchor.”

I remember speaking to Brian on his 66th birthday in 2008, when, in the company of Melinda, life was looking up for this American music icon.

Sporting a full head of brushed back grey hair, he spoke movingly about his situation. “I walk every day for exercise so I can keep alive”, he said.

“My state of being has been elevated because I’ve been exercising and writing songs.

“I’m in a better frame of mind these days. It feels great . . . it’s like I see some light. Things make sense to me again.”

Not just God, but the whole world, knows how special you were.

Tottenham, Aston Villa and Newcastle in race to sign £25m Manchester United star on loan

Tottenham, Aston Villa and Newcastle United are in the running to sign Jadon Sancho from Manchester United in the summer transfer window, according to reports.

Chelsea confirmed on Wednesday that they are not taking up their £25 million permanent option to sign Sancho following his season-long stint at Stamford Bridge and have paid a £5m penalty fee to send him back to United.

Sancho’s future is now uncertain as it’s understood that Ruben Amorim has no plans to integrate the 25-year-old into his squad for United’s pre-season campaign.

According to The Sun, Sancho has already attracted interest from three Premier League clubs with Spurs, Villa and Newcastle all keeping tabs on the winger’s situation at Old Trafford.

It’s claimed that Villa will aim to secure a loan deal but United are looking for a permanent sale this summer.

Chelsea, who is on a £300,000-a-week deal with United, had the option to sign Sancho permanently for a £25m fee but could not reach an agreement with the winger over personal terms.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund have all but ruled out the prospect of re-signing Sancho this summer.

Dortmund signed Sancho from Manchester City for £8m in 2017 and the winger enjoyed the best seasons of his career with the Bundesliga club before his £73m move to United in 2021.

Sancho has been linked with a return to Dortmund this summer but the German club’s sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, says the club have other priorities.

‘Of course, contact with Jadon is always there, in some way, because we have a very long history,’ Kehl told Ruhr Nachrichten.

‘But that’s not an issue for us right now. We have other priorities at the moment, and that’s why the Sancho issue may have been more talked about in the media than internally.’
