Chelsea have confirmed the shirt number Dario Essugo will wear following his £18m move to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues agreed a deal to sign the Portuguese midfielder in March alongside the signing of winger Geovany Quenda.

Quenda, 18, will spend another season at Sporting before joining Chelsea next summer, but Essugo has arrived in west London just in time for the Club World Cup.

Essugo impressed for Spanish side Las Palmas last season despite the club suffering relegation from La Liga.

The 20-year-old has signed a contract with Chelsea until 2033 and the club have confirmed he will wear the No. 14 shirt going forward.

That shirt was previously worn by Joao Felix but Chelsea are in talks to sell the Portuguese playmaker to Benfica.

Chelsea only signed Felix last summer but he struggled for game-time in the first-half of the season before being sent on loan to AC Milan in January.

Felix’s struggles continued in Serie A and the 25-year-old now looks set to return to his boyhood club Benfica in a deal worth around £20m.

‘I’m very happy,’ Essugo said after arriving at Chelsea. ‘It’s a big step to make early in my career.

‘Every player dreams of getting to a big club and Chelsea is no exception. It’s a massive club and I’m feeling proud and very happy to be here.

‘Honestly, Chelsea showed big interest in me. When that happens, you can’t turn it down. When my dad told me Chelsea were interested, I was very happy and here we are now!’

Last week, Mykhailo Mudryk was stripped of his No. 10 shirt by Chelsea, who handed the iconic jersey to Cole Palmer.

Palmer has worn the No. 20 shirt for Chelsea ever since his £42.5 million move from Manchester City two years ago.

Mudryk, meanwhile, was handed Chelsea’s No.10 shirt when he joined Stamford Bridge in a £88.5m deal from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023.

The Ukrainian has not featured for Chelsea since November after being provisionally suspended for failing a doping test the previous month.

Chelsea have also confirmed new signing Liam Delap will wear the No. 9 shirt following his £30m switch from Ipswich Town.

Enzo Maresca’s side, who finished fourth in the Premier League last season and won the Conference League, begin their Club World Cup campaign on Monday against Mexican side Leon.

The Blues then face Brazilian giants Flamengo and Tunisian outfit ES Tunis as they bid to progress from Group D and reach the knockout stages.

Felix, Raheem Sterling and Djordje Petrovic have all been left out of Chelsea’s Club World Cup squad as the Blues look to offload them this summer.

But new signings Delap, Essugo and Mamadou Sarr will also feature for the Premier League side, along with loan star Andrey Santos.

Man City set to beat Arsenal to signing of new Martin Odegaard

Manchester City are set to continue their astonishing summer recruitment drive by winning the race to sign Arsenal target Sverre Nypan.

The 18-year-old looked likely to move in January when he was courted by the Gunners, Aston Villa and Girona.

Nypan, ultimately, decided his development would be best served by remaining with Rosenborg until the end of the Norwegian season.

The gifted teenager is ready to take the net step in his career, however, and has been persuaded to join City, according to The Athletic.

Arsenal had felt they might be at an advantage given the influence exerted by Norway’s national team captain Martin Odegaard, whom Nypan has been likened to, but the player is now bound for the Etihad Stadium.

City are likely to loan out the creative midfielder ahead of next season where he will gain valuable first team experience.

Personal terms are yet to be agreed, but once a deal is struck the transfer is expected to represent  record fee for a player from the Norwegian league.

Earlier on Wednesday, City have completed the £46.3million signing of Netherlands midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan.

The Premier League club have confirmed the 26-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium.

His arrival makes it four signings in a week for City, who announced deals for £30.5m midfielder Rayan Cherki from Lyon and Chelsea’s third-choice goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli on Tuesday, while left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri joined from Wolves in a £31.3m move on Monday.

Those transfers have been finalised in time for the players to be registered for the group stages of the Club World Cup this month.

Will Arsenal regret Sverre Nypan snub?

Having invested a fair amount of effort and resource back in January in their attempt to woo Nypan, there will be a fair amount of frustration that the player is headed elsewhere.

That said, Arsenal are already well stocked for gifted teenage midfield technicians given they boast the likes of Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri and the even younger Max Dowman.

Lewis-Skelly, already a full England international, made the left-back slot his own last season but Mikel Arteta is yet to find an opportunity to deploy him in his more natural central midfield role.

The same, to an extent, is true of Nwaneri whose best performances last season came when he was stationed out on the wing during Bukayo Saka’s injury-enforced layoff.

Dowman, meanwhile, is set to feature in pre-season and is likely to force his way into the first team squad next term having already apparently outgrown Arsenal’s various youth teams.

Nypan is clearly a huge talent, but the competition for places at Arsenal is already so intense that this is one prospect the Gunners can afford to miss out on.

Reijnders arrives at City after impressing in an otherwise disappointing season at Milan, who finished eighth in Serie A and missed out on qualification for Europe.

He scored 15 goals in the 2024-25 campaign and will bolster Pep Guardiola’s midfield options following this summer’s departure of Kevin De Bruyne.

The Dutchman said: ‘I am ecstatic to be signing for Manchester City. City are one of the biggest teams in the world, with the best coach, world-class players and outstanding facilities.

‘Under Pep Guardiola, City have won so many titles and I want to help keep that going with a lot more success in the coming years. It is also a dream come true to play in the Premier League.

‘This league has seen many of the best Dutch players perform through the years and it’s an inspiration to follow in their footsteps.

‘I am really looking forward to getting going, meeting the other players and showing the Manchester City fans what I can do.’

City’s latest transfer activity continues an overhaul of the squad that began with the January signings of Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis.

Further deals are also possible as the club respond to a disappointing season in which they failed to mount a strong Premier League title defence and exited the Champions League before the last 16.

Director of football Hugo Viana added: ‘We are very happy that Tijjani has joined us and we’re excited for him to join Pep’s squad.

‘Tijjani adds extra energy, composure and creativity to our midfield, and working with Pep and our coaches will only see him go from strength to strength.’

City will play their first match in the Club World Cup against Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca on June 18 and have further group games against Al Ain of Abu Dhabi and Juventus.

The 2025 US Open is set to be a ‘brutal’ test – just ask the players

2025 U.S. OPEN - Preview Day One

The US Open has built its brand on being ‘golf’s toughest test’, and in Oakmont Country Club, the site of this week’s tournament, it has a course that typifies that more than most.

In recent years, the United States’ national championship has faced criticism for not producing courses with the requisite penal conditions that fans have come to expect.

That was particularly the case two years ago at Los Angeles Country Club, where Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele carded the lowest rounds in US Open history, shooting eight-under-par 62s within 15 minutes of each other during a benign and friendly first round.

Fans hungry to see the best players in the world suffer should not worry this week, though. High scores and punishment await on every hole.

A par-70 layout measuring at 7,372 yards this week, Oakmont possesses two par-5s over 600 yards, a par-3 over 300 yards and a whopping 168 bunkers littered around its 18 holes.

With fairways only 28 yards wide on average, driving the ball straight will be the key to success. Land in the five-inch thick rough on either side, and many will be forced to lay up short of the green or simply hack out sideways.

Get to the greens, and the challenge is no easier. The huge, undulating putting surfaces will be rapid and tricky to navigate. Players have already been seen chipping on the green during practice rounds as they try to find solutions.

‘It’s a different type of test’

Jon Rahm is expecting high scores this week (Picture: Getty)

Such conditions should come as no surprise. When Oakmont last hosted the US Open in 2016, just four players finished below par for the tournament. Before that in 2007, Angel Cabrera’s winning score was +5.

‘It’s just a tough course. It’s so difficult where very few times anybody has won under par,’ former US Open champion Jon Rahm said.

‘If it doesn’t rain, most likely over par will win again. It’s something that none of us are used to, but it’s a challenge you need to embrace.

‘If there’s any part of your game that will be tested on a week like this, it will be your mental game, that’s for sure.’

Who are the favourites this week?

Scottie Scheffler – 11/4

Bryson DeChambeau – 7/1

Jon Rahm – 10/1

Rory McIlroy – 12/1

Ludvig Aberg – 20/1

Xander Schauffele – 20/1

Collin Morikawa – 22/1

Joaquin Niemann – 25/1

Shane Lowry – 28/1

Tommy Fleetwood – 28/1

Justin Thomas – 33/1

Patrick Cantlay – 33/1

Sepp Straka – 33/1

Viktor Hovland – 40/1

Ben Griffin – 50/1

Brooks Koepka – 50/1

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler is the favourite for the week, but even the three-time major champion is under no illusions as to the task awaiting him.

‘This is probably the hardest golf course that we’ll play, maybe ever, and that’s pretty much all it is. It’s just a different type of test,’ the American admitted.

And what about the defending champion? Bryson DeChambeau is renowned as being one of the game’s longest and most accurate drivers, but even the LIV Golf star was left awestruck by Oakmont’s sheer size.

‘It’s a beast, it’s brutal. The 18th was playing into the wind yesterday – I hit a great drive and still had 240 yards in,’ DeChambeau told ESPN. ‘I was like ‘oh my god, what is this test, this is crazy’. It’s a great test of golf.’

‘I hope it psychs a lot of players out’

Given all the challenges presented by Oakmont, this edition of the US Open may quickly become a mental test as much as it is a golfing one.

Scorecard errors can quickly compound if players buckle under the weight of Oakmont’s unrelenting setup. Having the experience to navigate those setbacks could well come to define a player’s week.

‘Being perfectly honest and very selfish, I hope it psychs a lot of players out,’ two-time major champion Justin Thomas said.

‘I understand this place is hard. I don’t need to read articles, or I don’t need to hear horror stories. I’ve played it. I know it’s difficult.

‘It’s getting a game plan for how you’re going to approach the course mentally and strategically.’
