New coronavirus only ‘one small step from spilling over into humans’ and sparking widespread outbreak, say scientists

A NEW coronavirus may only be “a small step away from spilling over into humans”, scientists have warned – sparking fears of another pandemic.

Scientists believe the variant, called HKU5-CoV-2, may infect a broader range of animals than Covid-19 and may have more potential for jumping between species.

Dr Michael Letko, a molecular virologist at WSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, lead the research into the concerning variant[/caption]

American scientists fear the virus – found in China – may be one small mutation away from also being able to infect humans, which could lead to a widespread outbreak.

The new study, published in Nature Communications, looked at a lesser-known group of coronaviruses called merbecoviruses.

It includes HKU5 and MERS-CoV, which is responsible for the deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.

First noted in 2012, the virus typically spreads from infected camels to humans causes severe respiratory disease, which can be fatal to 34 per cent of its victims.

The research team, which included scientists at Washington State University (WSU), the California Institute of Technology and the University of North Carolina, sought to understand how merbecoviruses infiltrate the cells of their hosts.

While most bugs in the group seemed to pose little threat to people, scientists said one subgroup, HKU5, has concerning traits.

Michael Letko, a virologist at WSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, said: “Merbecoviruses – and HKU5 viruses in particular – really hadn’t been looked at much, but our study shows how these viruses infect cells.

“What we also found is HKU5 viruses may be only a small step away from being able to spill over into humans.”

Like other coronaviruses, merbecoviruses rely on a spike protein to bind to receptors and invade host cells.

Dr Letko’s team used virus-like particles containing the part of the spike protein responsible for binding to receptors and tested their ability to infect cells in their lab.

While most merbecoviruses appeared unlikely to be able to infect humans, HKU5 viruses — which have been found across Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East — were shown to use a host receptor known as ACE2, the same used by the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19.

But for now HKU5 viruses can only use the ACE2 gene in bats and can’t deploy it on humans nearly as well.

Examining HKU5 viruses found in Asia – where their host is the Japanese house bat – the researchers demonstrated some mutations in the spike protein that may allow the viruses to bind to ACE2 receptors in other species, including humans.

“These viruses are so closely related to MERS, so we have to be concerned if they ever infect humans,” Dr Letko said.

“While there’s no evidence they’ve crossed into people yet, the potential is there — and that makes them worth watching.”

Dr Letko said the study and its methods could be used for future research projects and to help the development of new vaccines and treatments.

What is the new Covid variant confirmed in the UK?

The new strain – called NB.1.8.1 – has been spotted in the parts of the UK, such as Ireland and Wales.

It’s also cropped up in Europe, the US and Australia, as well as Egypt, the Maldives, Thailand, China and Hong Kong.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently issued a warning over NB.1.8.1, designating it as a “variant under monitoring” due to its global spread and key mutations.

“Despite a concurrent increase in cases and hospitalisations in some countries where NB.1.8.1 is widespread, current data do not indicate that this variant leads to more severe illness than other variants in circulation,” the WHO said.

But while it may not be particularly severe, it may infect people more easily than previous variants, with some evidence suggesting that the variant binds more tightly to human cells.

A recent study that has not yet been peer reviewed suggests that a person infected with NB.1.8.1 may be more likely to pass the virus on to someone else, compared to earlier variants.

The WHO stressed that, based on available evidence, the variant’s risk to public health was “low at the global level”.

“Currently approved Covid-19 vaccines are expected to remain effective to this variant against symptomatic and severe disease,” it added.

Symptoms include sore throat, fatigue, fever, mild cough, muscle aches and a blocked nose.

Some people may also get gastrointestinal symptoms.

It’s not the first time concerns have been raised over HKU5.

Earlier this year, Chinese scientists warned that HKU5-CoV-2 may be able to jump straight from bats to humans without another animal in between.

This suggests a higher potential for zoonotic spillover – when a disease spreads from animal to human.

If there is no ‘intermediate ‘middle animal’, it becomes harder to predict and prevent spillover events through interactions such as wildlife trading or hunting.

“There is the potential for this new virus to spillover to human, like previous coronaviruses including SARS-CoV-2,” said Dr Gary R McLean, a research fellow at the Imperial College London, who was not involved in the study.

But he noted that, so far, there is no “evidence” that HKU5-CoV-2 can infect people – the paper is based on tests in a laboratory, showing the bug’s “potential”.

“Hopefully the Chinese authorities now have good surveillance systems in place and the laboratories work to rigid safety standards that minimise the risk of spillover occurring,” he said.

The WHO has previously listed MERS and Covid as two of several diseases – alongside the mysterious disease X – that could spark a pandemic, but for which there is no specific treatment or vaccine.

Ex On The Beach star gives birth to FOURTH child and shares first pics

EX On The Beach star Helen Briggs has given birth to her fourth child with boyfriend Chet Johnson – a baby girl.

Helen, 30, and Chet, 35, were congratulated by fans afer they welcomed their daughter into the world.

Chet announced their happy news in a video on Instagram showing Helen on the operating table in hospital.

The video cut to Helen cradling her baby who wore an adorable pink wool hat.

Chet was then seen carrying their baby to the car before the parents introduced their newborn to their other kids Ocean, Elvis and Peach.

He captioned the post: “She has done it again… the strongest, most beautiful woman I know just brought our fourth baby into the world.

“Watching you become a mother all over again has left me in complete awe.

“You are a super mum & our family is whole because of you –and I couldn’t be more proud or more in love. I love you so much.”

MAFS groom Kieran Chapman was among the first to reply, writing: “One of the most gorgeous family’s to grace the internet… congratulations to you all. Love, health and wealth.”

Love Island star Kady Mcdermott penned: “Congrats to my favourite family on the internet!!!!”

And former Towie star Danielle Armstrong penned: “Awe congratulations guys”

The couple got together after reuniting on series four of Ex On The Beach in 2016.

Two years ago they split after Helen accused Chet of cheating.

She posted an explosive statement on Instagram accusing Chet of being unfaithful, which he denied.

They got back together shortly after, and during a Q&A on Instagram, one follower asked: “Are you and Chet back together?”

She said: “Chet always denied the allegation and later down the line cleared his name.

“Putting a statement out there was a hasty decision on my behalf, because the evidence I had was nil and void and led to me accusing Chet of something he actually didn’t do.

“I don’t know why I let these trolls get to me and try and ruin my relationship.

“Chet an I are working hard to get back on track for the sake of us as a couple and out family, and this is the last time I will speak on this matter.”

FAMILY FEUD

Two people who failed to publicly congratulate Chet and Helen on their happy news were his brother Casey and sister-in-law Marnie Simpson.

This comes after Marnie cut Helen and Chet out of her family Christmas last year.

The couples were previously close, but fans first noticed an issue in 2019, when Marnie gave birth to Rox and Helen had Ocean.

The women, who had even holidayed together, failed to publically congratulate each other then.

Tensions appeared to thaw around the time of Marnie and Casey’s wedding, although Helen stayed at home with their kids.

Then last year in a Q&A on Instagram, mum-of-two Marnie confirmed the family’s massive divide with the two couples at odds.

When asked if her children Rox and Oax still mix with Helen and Chet‘s kids, Marnie said: “Nope unfortunately not.

“Not anyone’s elses’s choice but their parents.”

Keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has now returned to parent club Chelsea[/caption]

Andoni Iraola masterminded an unlikely push for the European places last term.

And much of Bournemouth‘s success was built on a strong defensive foundation.

The Cherries achieved their best-ever defensive record in the top flight, conceding just 46 goals.

On-loan keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga proved a hit after signing for the season from Chelsea.

Kepa, 30, has now returned to his parent club after keeping 8 Prem clean sheets.

But he might not be in West London for long, with Arsenal reportedly close to sealing a move for the Spaniard.

Kepa has just 12 months left on his contract with Chelsea, having made 35 appearances at Bournemouth in all competitions.

The Gunners are ready to activate his £5m release clause.

Bournemouth have also announced four players are leaving from their development team.

Lewis Brown, Coby Small, Kian Tydeman and Toure Williams have not been offered new deals.

All are now free to find new clubs.

A further nine second-year scholars are also departing.

Ryan Carroll, Joshua Hamilton-Olise, Kashanga Kasukumya, Teodor Minchev, Sonny Parkes, Joshua Salmon, William Seeley, Tommy Whitehead and Jay Williams have all been released.

The Cherries are bracing for offers on some of their breakout stars from last season.

Milos Kerkez is expected to join Premier League champions Liverpool.

While £70million-rated Antoine Semenyo is being eyed by Manchester United.

Baller League UK predictions: Odds and betting preview plus £30 in free bets

THE Final Four contest for the inaugural Baller League UK crown this Thursday.

We’ve taken a look ahead to the indoor action to see if we can pick out the best tips and odds for the big finale.

Baller League UK – Final four

After 11 grueling gamedays of Baller League UK action, it all comes down to this for the final four.

One of Deportrio, MVPs United, Yanited or SDS FC will be crowned the winners of the inaugural competition which has gripped social media.

Some big names in the world of sport, entertainment, music and influencing have been involved and now we’ll find out the winner.

As table toppers after 11 gamedays, Deportrio are rightly the bookies favourites to claim victory on Thursday night – yet strangely go into their semi final with SDS FC as the underdogs, so work that one out.

The team managed by Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards have just gone off the boil in recent weeks with just one win in their last five, including a thumping 8-3 defeat from SDS FC last time out.

They did however just manage to cling onto top spot on goal difference after winning seven of their 11 games and scoring 42 goals in the process, though need to get back to their early tournament form if they want to win this.

Semi final opponents, SDS FC have won their last four games on the spin and haven’t tasted defeat since gameday five to finish just three points off the top.

In the other semi final, MVPs United – second to Deportrio on goal difference – take on AngryGinge’s team Yanited having also both won 7 of their 11 games.

The sides met only a couple of weeks ago on the gameday 9 fixture list, with the well-fancied Alisha Lehmann and Maya Jama’s side MVPs United coming out 4-3 victors.

But Yanited finished the league phase with comfortably the highest goal difference in the competition with +17 after the 11 games – with SDS FC (+12) the only side close.

So to sum up, the bookmaker odds are close for both semi finals and the outright markets and it’s no wonder why – this is anyone’s competition!

Baller League UK predictions

Final Four winner

SDS FC lost out to MVPs United on gameday three and started the competition with one win from five games.

So it’s been an almost upward curve from that moment on and they’re an attractive price to win this after last week’s heroics.

That thumping win over Deportrio to get them here was a big moment and that momentum could well carry them through two more games.

Warning over ‘dodgy’ Fire TV Sticks used to watch Sky Sports and Premier League games for as little as £6

BRITS are being warned that they could face jail time for using “dodgy” Fire Sticks that offer Sky Sports and Premier League games for as little as £6.

A growing number of people in the UK are believed to be switching to illegal streaming devices, but the Federation Against Copyright Theft has warned that this could lead to users having their ID stolen or their credit card details handed to criminals.

Many Brits are using illegally modified Fire Sticks[/caption]

Posts have begun flooding social media sites advertising modified Fire Sticks for just a few pounds.

According to The Mirror, one mobile number was used for over 800 Facebook posts, with Brits urged to contact the number via WhatsApp to get their hands on the illegal piece of tech.

Some posts advertised all Sky channels plus streaming sites such as Netflix and Disney Plus for as little as £2.50 a month.

In comparison, if you were to pay for Sky Sports, it would set you back by at least £50 a month.

Some dodgy sellers are even claiming that their service is legal, with one fraudster claiming to be from a company called IPTV.

They claimed that the company is a “online service to provide channels on Fire Stick, smart TVs, android TVs, mobile phone as well.

However, IPTV is just a general term for Internet Protocol Television.

And although may Brits are tempted by the budget prices of these illegal devices, the criminals providing them may end up in jail before they’ve had a chance to follow through on the deal.

Back in January, a Fire Stick scammer who was streaming illegal TV to thousands of people, was jailed for two years.

And Kieron Sharp, chairman of the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) said that dodgy Fire Stick users are breaking the law too, and could end up being prosecuted.

According to FACT, watching an illegal stream is an offence under the Fraud Act 2006, and has a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

However, consumers are more at risk from the Malware that comes with illegally modified devices.

Kieron warned that scammers could use the devices to hack your bank account or even hijack your camera and microphone.

People should be warned about this”, he said.

Where to buy a Fire TV Stick

Fire TV Sticks are an easy way to add streaming to an older television. They’re manufactured by Amazon, but you can buy them from a number of different stores.

“There’s a real risk of having your identity stolen or similar.

“If you give over your credit card details, you are giving them to criminals.

“They could get access to the camera on your TV, if it has one, or microphone.

“There is no safety or security with what you are getting with these modified devices.”

Amazon has said it has made changes to Fire Sticks to make it harder for criminals to modify them.

An Amazon spokesperson said: “Pirated content violates our policies regarding intellectual property rights, and compromises the security and privacy of our customers.

“We remain vigilant in our efforts to combat piracy and protect customers from the risks associated with pirated content, which includes prohibiting apps that infringe upon the rights of third parties in our Appstore, and warning customers of the risks associated with installing or using apps from unknown sources.”

England vs Senegal preview

England return to action following Saturday’s sleep-inducing victory over Andorra.

The Three Lions secured maximum points to maintain their 100% start to World Cup qualification courtesy of Harry Kane’s solitary second-half goal.

But it was a hugely disappointing display against a team ranked 173rd in the world, with manager Thomas Tuchel later admitting his side “lacked the seriousness and the urgency” throughout.

Captain Kane added that matches with England in June can often be difficult with players jaded following a long club season.

A point perhaps proven by the fact England lost to Iceland 1-0 in June 2024, and were hammered 4-0 at home to Hungary in June 2022.

England will therefore need to raise their levels if they are to maintain their 100% record under Thomas Tuchel.

And new surroundings might just spark an improvement with Nottingham Forest’s City Ground playing host to Tuesday’s friendly – a venue they’ve not visited since 1909.

And they’ll need that spark when facing significantly better opposition in Senegal, who are unbeaten in their last 23 matches inside 90 minutes.

Pape Thiaw’s side are 19th in FIFA’s rankings, and arrive having secured a deserved 1-1 draw with Ireland courtesy of Ismaila Sarr’s late equaliser.

They have, however, won just one of their last seven matches against European nations (D3 L3), while England have never lost in 21 matches against African opposition (W15 D6), winning their only previous meeting with Senegal 3-0 in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

England vs Senegal preview betting tips and predictions

Win to Nil

England may be searching for sharper finishing up front, but there’s been no such concern at the back.

The Three Lions have won their last six matches in all competitions, keeping a clean sheet in each of the last five – they’ve never previously won six in a row without conceding.

But this looks a prime opportunity to extend that impressive defensive record against a side – missing Sadio Mane – that they swept aside 3-0 at the 2022 World Cup.

Kane able

It was no surprise to see Harry Kane on the scoresheet again over the weekend.

The Bayern Munich forward, 31, netted the only goal of the game against Andorra – meaning he’s scored in all three of England’s games under Thomas Tuchel so far.

Kane has netted in each of his last four England games, and also scored when these sides last met at the 2022 World Cup.

Who is Megan Moore?

Megan Moore, a payroll specialist from Southampton who also goes by Meg, is set to star in Love Island 2025.

The 25-year-old was going to be in the cast of last year’s instalment of the steamy show as a bombshell, but passed the opportunity up after watching the series and realising that “no one was my type”.

Meg explained: “I was in a WhatsApp group that was to keep me updated on the show.

“I’d tell them who I fancied and would my top three be.

“It just got to the point where I felt like I wouldn’t really have fitted in or that I would really get on with that person.

Meg is looking for a man who is tall and tanned, with nice eyes and a nice smile.

She said her biggest ick is men in flip-flops and bad hygiene.

Meg added: “He needs to have a good fashion sense and a really good, funny personality that I can get on with.”

“I’ll probably be in the thick of the drama. I don’t cause it, it just comes to me, so…

Meg is a contestant on the show’s 12th season, which premiers at 9pm on Monday, June 9, 2025.
