Why Imane Khelif is likely to KEEP Olympic gold medal despite leaked document ‘proving boxer is biological male’

IMANE KHEIF is likely to KEEP the Olympic gold medal – despite being hit with fresh accusations of being a biological male.

Khelif won gold for Algeria at the Paris Games in 2024 – a year after being banned from International Boxing Association competition.

In 2023, the IBA banned Khelif after tests taken in New Delhi allegedly produced the DNA of a “male”.

The IOC – who replaced the IBA as the Olympic’s boxing governing body – were warned about the tests and urged to remove Khelif from the competition.

But Khelif was allowed to box in Paris because of her female passport status.

Since then, the alleged sex-test results from the 2023 World Championships have been published for the first time by 3 Wire Sports.

The medical report appears to indicate that the boxer is biologically male.

American journalist Alan Abrahamson produced the result of a test said to have been carried out on the boxer in New Delhi in March 2023 – which triggered the boxer’s disqualification.

The document published summarises the findings on Khelif as “abnormal”, stating: “Chromosome analysis reveals male karyotype.”

A karyotype refers to an individual’s complete set of chromosomes, which in Khelif’s case has been reported by (IBA) as being XY, the male pattern.

The leaked medical reports have sparked calls for Khelif to be stripped of the gold medal she won in the women’s 66 kg category.

However, Doraine Lambelet Coleman – a Thomas L. Perkins Distinguished Professor of Laws at Duke Law School – explained why that is unlikely.

The legal expert told Newsweek: “The IOC would not revoke medals won by athletes who were eligible according to the rules it set for the boxing competition in Paris.

“Unlike the eligibility rules set by the IBA and now World Boxing, those rules did not require competitors to be biologically female.”

The alleged test results carry the letterhead of Dr Lal PathLabs in New Delhi, accredited by the American College of Pathologists and certified by the Swiss-based International Organisation for Standardisation.

This directly challenges what IOC spokesman Mark Adams said in a tense news conference at the Paris Olympics.

He described the results that saw Khelif banned as “ad hoc” and “not legitimate”.

IOC president Thomas Bach even claimed that the results are the product of a Russian-led misinformation campaign.

It followed after the IBA – headed by Russia’s Umar Kremlev – had been stripped of IOC recognition in a row over ethics and financial management.

Khelif has always denied being a biological male and even named JK Rowling and Elon Musk in a cyberbullying lawsuit.

And the 26-year-old has vowed to fight on, even eyeing another gold at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

‘Silence is no longer an option’

But World Boxing has ruled that Khelif is ineligible to enter future events as a woman without first submitting to the same chromosome testing that has already triggered the boxer’s disqualification at global level.

The governing body – provisionally approved to run Olympic boxing in LA – announced that all athletes in its competitions over 18 years old must undergo a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) genetic test to determine their sex.

The test detects chromosomal material through a mouth swab, saliva or blood.

Khelif has failed to provide any evidence of having female chromosomes in the nine months since the gender scandal erupted.

In February, Khelif spoke out in her defence and wrote: “For two years, I have taken the high road while my name and image have been used, unauthorised, to further personal and political agendas through the spreading and dissemination of baseless lies and misinformation. But silence is no longer an option.

“The IBA, an organisation that I am no longer associated with and which is no longer recognised by the IOC, have again made baseless accusations that are false and offensive, using them to further their agenda.

“This is a matter that concerns not just me but the broader principles of fairness and due process in sport.

“My team is carefully reviewing the situation and will take all necessary legal steps to ensure that my rights and the principles of fair competition are upheld.

“Those responsible for these actions must be held accountable, and we will pursue all legal avenues to ensure that justice prevails.”

An IOC spokesperson told Sun Sport: “The IOC has always made it clear that eligibility criteria are the responsibility of the respective International Federation.

“The factors that matter to sports performance are unique to each sport, discipline, and/or event.

“We await the full details how sex testing will be implemented in a safe, fair and legally enforceable way.”

The absence of Earps, Kirby and Bright leaves a void – who are the England aces who can fill it?

IN a month’s time England begin their the defence of their European Championship crown in Switzerland.

Build-up to this year’s Euros has not been plain sailing in terms of some results on the pitch and shock announcements off it.

Today Sarina Wiegman will name the players included in her 23-strong England group who will battle for Euros glory.

Three who will not be on her list are Mary Earps, Fran Kirby and Millie Bright.

The trio were among the standout performers during England’s triumphant Euros charge three years ago.

Five weeks before the start of this year’s contest Mary Earps announced her retirement from international football.

Then came Fran Kirby, 31, hanging up her England boots after being informed that she would not be part of the squad for next month’s contest.

And yesterday vice captain Bright withdrew herself from selection after bravely explaining her need to do so for her “health and future in the game”.

The Chelsea captain’s announcement followed a season in which she skippered her club to a domestic trophy treble,

On the Daly Brightness podcast she hosts with former England ace Rachel Daly, Bright explained her decision was not taken lightly.

Yesterday she said: “It was something that I’d spoken about with friends, family, the people around me, and I gave it a lot of thought.

“But ultimately, I thought this was the best decision for the team, but also for myself and using this summer to zone into mentally, physically, getting myself back in tip-top condition.”

“It’s obviously hard, but I’m going to be the girls’ number one supporter and I know they’re going to go on and smash it.”

Bright, Earps and Kirby have played a huge part in England’s recent success with all playing in every single game of their last Euros campaign.

With all three unavailable for England, here is a look at who will fill the void at this year’s Euros.

Goalkeeper options

England’s shot stopper starter question has been answered with Hannah Hampton in place as their No1 for the Euros.

The Chelsea player won her battle for a starting spot with Earps after emerging as a first team regular under Wiegman.

This year Hampton has started in five of their last six Nations League games following Earps’ last start (final international appearance) on February 21.

While England’s away form in the contest has been mixed, including a 2-1 loss to world champions Spain this week, Hampton kept clean sheets on three of those occasions.

This includes their 1-0 win against the World Cup winners who are among their main rivals at this year’s Euros.

While Hampton is set to be England’s starter in goal, it is not entirely clear who will be the next automatic choice after her.

England have options in Anna Moorhouse and Man City’s Khiara Keating although both are yet to make their senior international debuts.

Last October Moorhouse won the National Women’s Soccer League shield with top-flight American club Orlando Pride

A month later the former West Ham goalkeeper set a new record for the most clean sheets in a NWSL season with 13 in 26 games.

A friendly clash with Jamaica as England’s final game before their Euros opener against France could be an opportunity to see Moorhouse or Keating tested.

Playmaker and forward options

Should Lauren James win her race back to fitness from a hamstring problem, she and Jess Park are likely to be England’s primary attacking midfielders as well as Ella Toone.

All three have been deployed in the number 10 role under Wiegman although Toone and James have faced battles with injury in recent months.

England also have Beth Mead’s creative capabilities from the wing.

This week Wiegman revealed James was progressing well with her recovery from a hamstring issue.

It is hoped the forward, who shone for England at the 2023 World Cup, will be fit enough to compete at the Euros.

Central defence

With Bright’s withdrawal Alex Greenwood is likely to be deployed alongside Williamson in central defence.

The Man City skipper’s vision and versatility have made her one of England’s most dependable figures in their backline.

Her set-piece delivery skills will be a useful asset for the team.

With 98 caps she is also one of England’s most experienced players on the pitch and a calming presence on the pitch.

Aside from Greenwood, England also have the option of Jess Carter.

The ex-Chelsea defender, who won the Concacaf Champions Cup with Gotham FC , is more than capable of operating centrally or as a full-back.

King Charles braved the rain in east London today visiting the city’s first ever SXSW festival.

The Kingdom Choir, who performed at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding in 2018, sang to Charles while he toured the event in Shoreditch.

Charles kept himself dry holding an umbrella while meeting key figures in the creative arts and technology industries.

This week, London has been filled with thousands people attending SXSW, a conference that began in Texas but has evolved into a broader cultural festival.

The focal point of Charles’s was the immersive art installation, centred around sustainability, a subject which the King is passionate about.

The exhibit, made by London artist Damien Roach, is called Grounding. It utilises AI and data to transform landscape images, reflecting the natural world’s constant adaptation and evolution.

In a previous video address, Charles compared the rise of AI to the discovery of electricity, the splitting of the atom, and the creation of the internet.

He went on to meet speakers for a panel session called ‘Love the Earth’, before visiting Spitalfields to see an art exhibition from Caribbean artists, about British Art and Culture.

SXSW has been in full swing all week. SXSW CEO Max Alexander told Metro, one of the conference’s media partners, that attendees will witness a historic ‘love letter to London’.

Idris Elba, Katherine Ryan, Erykah Badu, Alice Glass, and Sophie Turner are among the many actors, musicians, creative minds, and pioneering entrepreneurs who will be giving talks and performances until Saturday.

Earlier this week, Sadiq Khan opened the inaugural London festival during a panel with Tania Bryer at The Truman Brewery.

‘This week the creative eyes of the world will be on London as our capital becomes the first European city to ever host SXSW,’ he said.

SXSW London takes place from today (June 2) until Saturday (June 7) at venues across London.  For more information and tickets, click here.
