Authorities in Wyoming have issued a heartbreaking update in the case of missing hiker and father of two Grant Gardner.
What’s the latest development in the case of Grant Gardner?
Minnesota resident Gardner, 38, was last heard from on July 29 after heading off on a solo hiking trip into the woods of Wyoming. On Wednesday, Aug. 20, the Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office announced in a news release that it had “exhausted all resources” and called off the search for the missing father.
“In consultation with family members, I have made the heartbreaking and difficult decision to suspend active search and rescue operations for Mr. Gardner,” Sheriff Ken Blackburn announced. “With weather conditions and other factors updated in our search models, we have to face the reality that the most optimistic survival odds have run out.”
What has Gardner’s family said about his disappearance?
The tragic announcement comes two weeks after Gardner’s wife, Lauren, told Cowboy State Daily that she was hopeful her husband would return home. She noted that Gardner, an experienced adventurer who has “been hiking for over a decade,” knew how to handle even the most extreme elements.
“I’m in shock, I think, and trying to stay strong for the kids,” she told the outlet. The couple share a 13-year-old and an 11-year-old. “This has never happened in all the years he’s gone out. He knows what he’s doing and has the skills. I’m just hoping right now. He’s used to this stuff, and he’s very detail-oriented.”
What have authorities said about calling off the search?
In the news release calling off the search, Blackburn admitted that “many team members feel like they have lost a battle by not finding Grant at this time,” but assured the public that every effort was made to locate him. “While grieving, they are humbled, and grateful beyond words,” Blackburn said of his team, adding that search efforts will continue if compelling evidence arises. “Our teams will rest, then begin search and recovery efforts as time and evidence allow.” Many local volunteers are also working to gather clues “to bring peace to this family.”
