Authors of Astérix and Obélix walked around Lisbon: they rode the tram and ate custard tarts

TEverything starts at Pastéis de Belém, in overcrowded Lisbon that today belongs to mass tourism, with a queue at the door and selfies with the pastry in the background being shot every ten seconds and shared on social media in the next ten. But Fabrice Caro doesn’t care about that. You are there to taste the Portuguese delicacy once again, following it with a bite and alternating the sip with the bite, in order to balance the sweet and the bitter. On this gray morning that will turn into a hot summer day in September, he spoke with the press from France and Germany, and also with Expresso, about the importance of pastel de nata for the script he wrote. “I couldn’t leave it out”, says the screenwriter of “Astérix na Lusitânia”, who with illustrator Didier Conrad pens the most recent book in the comic created in 1959 and the first set in Portuguese territory. The pastry made from puff pastry and cream even serves as a throwing weapon for one of the scenes in which the Lusitanians defend themselves from the Romans, with the invaluable help of their Gallic allies, and was as unavoidable as Port wine, Vinho Verde and, of course, the omnipresent cod.
