Autoeuropa admitted today that it could be affected by the lack of semiconductors due to a problem with the supply of the company Nexperia, but added that the Volkswagen group set up a ‘task-force’ to monitor the situation.
“There is a problem with the supply of semiconductors from the company Nexperia that could affect the entire European automotive industry, including naturally the Volkswagen group”, recognizes Autoeuropa in an internal company communication to which the Lusa agency had access.
Autoeuropa states that “so far, Volkswagen Autoeuropa has not been affected and that production for next week is guaranteed”.
In internal communication, the Palmela car factory, in the district of Setúbal, also assures that it is in “close contact with the `task-force´ that the Volkswagen Group created to identify risks of possible interruption in the supply of modules with Nexperia parts, in order to act quickly if it is necessary to take measures”.
According to a report published on Thursday by the Spanish agency EFE, the director of production for Volkswagen group brands, Christian Vollmer, told the German economic daily Handelsblatt that the group had already found “an alternative substitute that could compensate for the lack of semiconductor deliveries from Nexperia”.
EFE also states that the supply problems of Nexperia – a company based in the Netherlands, but which was acquired in 2019 by the Chinese company China Wingtech – began after the Dutch government took control of the company, to prevent the transfer of technology and knowledge to the Asian country, and China responded by interrupting exports of Nexperia products, essential for the entire automotive industry, including the group’s companies. German Volkswagen, one of the Chinese company’s biggest customers.
Problems with the supply of Nexperia products heighten concerns about a new crisis in the supply of semiconductors for the automotive industry, similar to what happened during the Covid-19 pandemic.
