Backdoor to MTN8: Kaizer Chiefs’ fate in the hands of Cape Town City

Kaizer Chiefs could still find themselves in the MTN8 competition, depending on the outcome of Cape Town City’s protest against Marumo Gallants.

The dispute centres around Monde Mphambaniso, who was allegedly fielded ineligibly by Gallants. If the club is found guilty and forced to forfeit points, Amakhosi could move up the table and qualify for the MTN8.

Initially, the PSL Disciplinary Committee chose not to prosecute Gallants for failing to obtain a necessary clearance certificate which is a key requirement before a player can be officially registered with the League.

Kaizer Chiefs might play in the top 8 afterall

Cape Town City, who were relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship after failing to win promotion/relegation play-offs, appealed to the SAFA Arbitration Tribunal and have now won the case.

If the tribunal’s ruling results in points being deducted from Gallants, it could open the door for Kaizer Chiefs to take the final MTN8 spot.

The DC hearing is set for Thursday and according to reports, there should be two scenarios: Marumo Gallants could be docket points or just fined.

In 2019, Mamelodi Sundowns were fined R250 000 for fielding ineligible player, which was Wayne Arendse. The likely outcome could be a fine which is bad news not only for Cape Town City but also Kaizer Chiefs fans who were hoping for a backdoor entrance.

Must Gallants get fined or docked points?
