According to the study, 74% of Democratic voters approve of the choice of Bad Bunnywhile only 10% express disapproval. Among Republicans, the trend is practically the opposite: 63% say they would have preferred the NFL to choose another interpreter and only 16% approve of the decision – a position that echoes criticism from the President’s allies Donald Trump.
Os independent voters are more balanced, with 52% in favor and 22% against the choice of the Puerto Rican musician. A significant portion of respondents, across all political groups, chose not to express an opinion.
The survey thus gives statistical form to a new front in the so-called North American “culture war”triggered soon after the NFL announcement. Conservative critics accused Bad Bunny – a three-time Grammy winner and artist who sings exclusively in Spanish – of not representing American culture and having positions openly contrary to Trump’s agenda.
A NFLwhich maintains a fan base across the entire political spectrum, defended the choice. Quoted by “Washington Post”, o Commissioner Roger Goodell stated that the decision was “carefully considered” and that “you rarely choose an artist without facing some form of negative reaction”.
Brittani Webb, assistant professor of Media Studies at Quinnipiac University, stressed that the NFL chose a “superestrela global”but added that Bad Bunny’s popularity “cannot escape the political tensions currently going through the United States”.
“For those who still insist that sport is apolitical, the polarized reactions to this announcement suggest otherwise,” noted Webb, also quoted by “Washington Post”.
Bad Bunny himself reacted to the criticism with irony, during a recent appearance on “Saturday Night Live”saying: “I’m very happy – and I think everyone is happy about it, even Fox News.”
