Bad weather causes dozens of floods in the Porto region. Strongly conditioned traffic

A National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) recorded between midnight and 7am this Friday 68 incidents related to bad weathermost public roads flooding mainly in the Porto region.

According to same source, there are no casualties or serious damage e a Porto Metropolitan Area was the most affected. A traffic circulation is interrupted on the AEP and Bessa roundabout viaducts, as well as on the new Campo Alegre viaduct. On the VCI, the exit to Boavista, towards Árrabida/Porto, was also closed, but has already partially reopenedsaid the same source.

Of the recorded occurrences, 59 were floods of public roads and structures, three tree falls, two road cleanings and four mass movements.

Sources of Sub-Regional Command of the Porto Metropolitan Area and the Porto Firefighters Regimenttold Lusa that they had received it during the night and early morning “many incidents related to heavy rain, not serious”but without being able to count them.

IPMA maintains red and orange warnings

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) predicts heavy and persistent rain, especially in the north and center, with intense wind and sea disturbances.

Os districts of Viseu, Aveiro and Coimbra are under red warning until noon this Friday, then changing to orange warning until midnight and yellow until Saturday at noon.

Bragança, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Leiria and Braga are also under orange warning, which will be reduced to yellow throughout Saturday. Lisbon, Setúbal, Santarém, Castelo Branco and Portalegre maintain a yellow warning.

The red warning indicates extreme meteorological risk; orange, moderate to high risk; and yellow, risk for activities dependent on the weather.

Civil Protection reinforces response

Due to worsening weather conditions, the ANEPC raised the level of readiness for 3, what does it imply reinforcement of resources and greater operational response capacity.

A Civil Protection alert to sudden increases in flow, urban flooding e contamination of drinking water sources in areas affected by recent fires. It is also recommended unblock rainwater drainage systems e fix loose structuressuch as scaffolding or signs, to prevent accidents.

A PSP appeals to prudence in driving, remembering that bad weather increases the risk of road accidents.
