Bad weather is coming. Civil Protection warns of the possibility of flooding in the coming days

The National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) issued this Thursday, October 30, a warning to the population for preventive behavior due to the forecast of heavy rain, wind and the possibility of flooding in the coming days.

An ANEPC source told the Lusa agency that the readiness level was raised to 3, which means a greater response capacity for operators.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) predicts persistent and sometimes heavy rain for Friday and Saturday in the north and center of the continent, with some severity in those regions.

Due to the heavy rain, the IPMA has already issued an orange warning for the northern and central regions between 03:00 on Friday and 00:00 on Saturday and a yellow warning only for the districts of Lisbon, Santarém and Castelo Branco between 03:00 on Friday and 06:00 on Saturday.

Civil Protection warned that significant variations may occur in flows in historically more vulnerable areas.

In the Minho river basin, flows may increase, but without critical situations. On the Coura River, it is recommended to monitor the situation.

The rise of Lima, Cávado and Douro is also predictable, “without critical situations” being noted.

Regarding the information provided by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), it is recommended that surveillance be intensified in the Vouga basin, where the waters of the Águeda River may register an increase “higher than normal”.

It is also recommended to monitor the water level of the Mondego, as this could increase inflows to Coimbra.

The recommendation extends to the Lis River and the Tagus basin, due to the forecast increase in flows in the Zêzere River. In the Nabão River, there may also be an increase in the water level, which must be monitored.

In the Ribeiras do Oeste basin, there may be an increase in flows in the Arnoia and Alcoa rivers.

The worsening of meteorological conditions is associated with the forecast of flooding in urban areas, floods and contamination of drinking water sources by inert materials resulting from rural fires.

Civil Protection warned of the need to ensure the unblocking of rainwater drainage systems and the adequate fixation of loose structures, namely scaffolding, signs and other suspended materials.

Minimum temperatures will register a more significant drop, with values in the order of 10 to 15 degrees being expected in the north and central regions, falling to values below 05 degrees in some places in the northern and central interior on the night of Saturday to Sunday.

Minimum temperatures will vary between 13 and 18 degrees in the southern region, dropping to values between 9 and 14 degrees on the night of Saturday to Sunday.

The PSP also warned drivers about the bad weather forecast for the next few days, which increases the risk of road accidents.
