The last political position of Francisco Pinto Balsemão, the founder of the PSD who passed away this Tuesday, was as president of Luís Marques Mendes’ political commission for the Presidency of the Republic. And it was in this role that he made what ended up being his last appeal to the activists: not to disperse their votes to other candidates. The “prolongation of malicious quarrels provoked and exploited by obscene political interests that feed on other people’s misfortunes” is contributing to voters’ disbelief, he warned just over a month ago, on September 16th.
On that day, the news they spoke of a touch back from the founder, in a message written to be read at the meeting of that candidate’s informal advisory body: “The saturation of very close elections and the prolongation of malicious quarrels provoked and exploited by obscene political interests that feed on other people’s misfortunescan lead to disbelief in the value of voting, falling into discouragement and giving in to abstention”, said the founder and president of Grupo Impresa, admitting that “the mission” of electing Marques Mendes as the next President of the Republic will not be easy.
He said this citing several reasons. For the “diversity of presidential candidacies for all tastes”; because population is still “hurt by the calamity of the fires and the brutal accident in Lisbon as painful consequences”; e, Lastly, because there is a “saturation of very close elections”which leads – said Balsemão – to a “prolongation of malicious quarrels provoked and exploited by obscene political interests that feed on other people’s misfortunes” and which, in Balsemão’s opinion, “can lead to disbelief in the value of voting, falling into discouragement and giving in to abstention”.
The PSD’s number 1 militant would take advantage of the message to criticize the advance of Chega and anti-system movements that “take advantage of other people’s misfortunes”, making a request to his party’s militants: “It is in these moments that the militancy’s spirits have to come to the fore, gain momentum and close ranks around the candidateto convey the message of hope for a better future with Luís Marques Mendes in the Presidency of the Republic”
