BBC backs presenter who changed ‘pregnant people’ to ‘women’ on-air

The BBC has backed news presenter Martine Croxall after she went viral for changing a line in her autocue from “pregnant people” to “women” during a live broadcast.

The moment quickly caught attention over the weekend. It was after Croxall appeared to pause, correct the wording mid-sentence, and give a subtle eye-roll. The incident took place while she was quoting Dr Malcolm Mistry, a researcher from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Dr. Malcolm had used the phrase “pregnant people” in a study about heatwaves and health risks.

Croxall read: “Malcolm Mistry, who was involved in the research, says that the aged, pregnant people… women… and those with pre-existing health conditions need to take precautions.”

The clip went viral soon after, with people such as J.K. Rowling jumping in to praise Croxall. Rowling has previously shown support in the Supreme Court ruling on trans issues. And now she said she had found her “new favourite BBC presenter.” She also added, “You’d better not be in any trouble…”

However, according to Deadline, the BBC has made it clear that Croxall isn’t facing any reprimand. According to a BBC News insider, she wasn’t correcting an internal BBC script. The corporation’s style guide doesn’t require presenters to use the term “pregnant people.” Another source added that given the recent UK Supreme Court ruling, the broader mood within the BBC may be shifting.

In fact, at the time of the ruling, the BBC said, “BBC News is assessing the ruling to consider any updates which might need to be made to the style guide as a result.”

Croxall has since posted on X thanking people for their support. She said, “A huge thank you to everyone who has chosen to follow me today for whatever reason. It’s been quite a ride…”
