British fans of an Australian drama series can finally stream it to their hearts’ content after a seven-month wait for new episodes.
The Newsreader, which stars Fringe actress Anna Torv and Interview With the Vampire actor Sam Reid, follows the lives of a newsroom crew in 1980s Australia.
Season one aired in 2021, while seasons two and three came out in 2023 and 2025 respectively, and UK TV fans have been able to stream the first two seasons on BBC iPlayer.
However, while season three of The Newsreader hit Australian TV in February, UK viewers have had to wait for several months before being able to catch up.
That’s now finally going to be possible, with the BBC having at last picked up season three – seven months after it premiered for audiences Down Under.
BBC Two will show the first episode of season three in the UK for the first time on Thursday night (September 11), while the rest of the season is available now on iPlayer.
The series currently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 25 reviews, with the audience rating on the same website stands at an impressive 90%.
While Anna Torv and Sam Reid lead the series, the supporting cast includes Australian stars such as Robert Taylor, William McInnes, and Marg Downey.
The first season is set in 1986 and follows the working relationship between a female newsreader and a male reporter, with each episode basing itself on a real historical event.

Season two begins in 1987 and follows the same structure, with each episode covering a real-life news incident, eventually ticking over into 1988.
The third season then jumps ahead almost a year in time, beginning with the mid-air bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, which killed 259 people on board and a further 11 people on the ground in Lockerbie, Scotland.
On X, @Amz07 made the wonderful discovery about new episodes being available in the UK: ‘How have I only just discovered there are more eps of The Newsreader on iPlayer? Tomorrow night’s TV sorted!’
An Australian fan welcomed British viewers to season three: ‘A big welcome to season three to our UK viewers! The wild ride begins today, on BBC2 and BBC iPlayer!

‘I hope you cherish this season. It’s surprising, it’s challenging, and it’s one that you will take to heart,’ @NewsAtSix1986 commented on their X profile.
Before it aired, season three of The Newsreader was confirmed as being the last one, with the show ending appropriately on the cusp of the 1990s.
Each season of The Newsreader contains six episodes, like most British dramas, meaning that the show has now produced 18 episodes overall.
Of those, the highest rated episodes on IMDb are the penultimate episode of season two, and half of the third season – which indicates how happy fans were with the ending.
Watch The Newsreader on BBC iPlayer.
