The Breakfast Club is making a surprise return to theaters. More than 40 years after it was first released, John Hughes’ iconic coming-of-age film will be re-released in cinemas across the country on Sept. 7 and Sept. 10, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In a statement, Universal Pictures’ president of domestic theatrical distribution, Jim Orr, said, “The Breakfast Club is one of the great films about identity, alienation, and connection. The film’s honesty, humor, and humanity continue to connect with audiences of all ages. We’re honored to bring it back to theaters so that a new generation can experience its power on the big screen.”
A tease on Universal Pictures’ official Instagram page also announced ticket presales. “Busted! Head back to detention September 7 and 10 and relive The Breakfast Club in theaters. Get tickets now!” the post read.
The Breakfast Club was originally released on Feb. 15, 1985. Starring Molly Ringwald (as Claire Standish, the princess), Emilio Estevez (Andrew Clark, the athlete), Judd Nelson (John Bender, the criminal), Anthony Michael Hall (Brian Johnson, the brain), and Ally Sheedy (Allison Reynolds, the basket case), the film followed the unexpected bonds formed during a life-changing Saturday detention at a Chicago high school.
The Breakfast Club grossed more than $50 million when it was originally released, per People. The young group of actors in the film became known as the Brat Pack, along with Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, and Rob Lowe.
‘The Breakfast Club’ Cast Reunited in April 2025
In April, all five cast members of The Breakfast Club reunited for the first time in 40 years at a panel at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo. Estevez had skipped past reunions.
“I feel really, very emotional and moved to have us all together,” Ringwald said, per Today. “This is the first time that Emilio has joined us. We don’t have to use the cardboard cutout anymore because he’s here.”
Estevez explained that the 40th anniversary felt special. “It’s here in Chicago, where we made the film, and obviously the 40th anniversary, and it just felt like it was time,” he said.
