Beloved NJ Diner Closes After 50 Years. Controversial Replacement Already Named

One common thread throughout the state of New Jersey, one that can’t be debated like pizza or the varying accents in different regions, is the plethora of classic diners seen up and down the state.

Sadly, like we’ve been seeing with other businesses, many of these signature staples that have been around for years have recently closed.

And that’s unfortunately what’s happening with the Collingswood Diner in Oaklyn, NJ, after 50-plus years of being in business, initially opening its doors in 1974.

Why Is the Classic NJ Diner Closing Its Doors After 51 Years in Business?

While owners of restaurants have cited rising food costs and the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic for ultimately deciding to close their business, the owner of the Collingswood Diner sounds like he’s just turning the page.

“I’m happy,” owner Jimmy Papandreou said. “I want to enjoy what I have left.”

Surely local customers were disappointed to learn the diner would be closing, but at the same time it’s kind of refreshing to hear that the 72-year-old Papandreou appears to have made the decision on his own accord, seeking a relaxing retirement.

And one that’s likely more than well-deserved considering years of service dating back to 1974.

This past Sunday, Aug. 10, marked the final round of meals at the landmark diner, officially closing its doors for good.

With diner owner Papandreou set to enjoy retirement, the restaurant has already been sold and will be getting a massive makeover, as it’s being redeveloped into a marijuana dispensary.

Since there are reportedly two dispensaries already in operation within a mile of the diner’s property, it just goes to show how much the cannabis industry continues to thrive ever since marijuana became legal for recreational purchase in New Jersey on April 21, 2022.

Apparently, diners on the cusp of closing in New Jersey have become desirable spots marijuana dispensaries due to their highway locations that comply with the zoning laws regarding residential neighborhoods.

The initial announcement of closing the Collingswood Diner was done so in a signature old-school fashion way, with the longtime owners simply affixing a note to the front door that said the following in all caps:

“THE OWNERS HAVE SOLD THE BUSINESS AND ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO RETIREMENT.”

No fancy email or push notification, just a succinct note that sprints straight to the point.
