Benfica vs Bayern Munich predictions, odds and betting tips

WITH their place in the Round of 16 already secured, Bayern Munich will look to clinch top spot in Group C when they face Benfica in North Carolina on Tuesday.

For Benfica, a draw would be enough to book their place in the knockout stages, while an unlikely win would see them top the group. However, a defeat could spell the end of their campaign.

Benfica vs Bayern Munich predictions

With six points from six, Bayern Munich sit top of Group C and have already secured their place in the Round of 16.

As a result, the German champions may look to rotate their squad. Vincent Kompany will be keen to maintain momentum, but with the tournament entering late June and following a long domestic season, it makes sense to rest key players ahead of the knockout stages.

Bayern’s two victories have been contrasting in style. They opened with a record-breaking 10-0 win over Auckland City, before grinding out a hard-fought 2-1 win against Boca Juniors. Harry Kane and Michael Olise provided the goals in that second match, with Olise scoring the decisive winner in the 85th minute.

The Bavarians are 2/11 to win Group C and stand as 5/1 joint-third favourites to win the Club World Cup outright.

Benfica head into the final group stage match in second place with four points from two games.

Their performances in the Club World Cup have been surprisingly okay, especially considering the disappointing end to their domestic campaign, where they finished runners-up to Sporting Lisbon in both the Primeira Liga and the Taça de Portugal.

Now under the guidance of former Wolves manager Bruno Lage, the Eagles began their tournament with a spirited 2-2 draw against Boca Juniors. Trailing by two goals early on, they clawed their way back through goals from Ángel Di María and Nicolås Otamendi. That point may prove to be crucial in the grand scheme of things.

Benfica followed that performance with a 6-0 win over Auckland City. Although the scoreline flatters, Lage’s men only broke the deadlock eight minutes into first-half stoppage time, so the win wasn’t without concern.

Benfica are 7/2 to win the group and 2/9 to qualify for the Round of 16. Boca Juniors are priced at 3/1 to overtake Benfica and clinch the second qualifying spot.

Benfica vs Bayern Munich betting tips

A draw is a welcome result for both teams as it would mean Bayern qualify as group winners and Benfica as group runners-up, no matter what Boca do against Auckland City. We don’t see that happening, though. Find out more in our match betting tips below:

Bayern Munich to win

While Benfica have impressed at times during the Club World Cup, we still expect them to fall short against Bayern Munich.

The Portuguese side’s campaign has been a mixed bag. They were sluggish out of the blocks in their opener, falling two goals behind to Boca Juniors before mounting a comeback. And although they cruised to a 6-0 win over Auckland City, it took them more than 45 minutes to break down the part-timers.

On the positive side, Benfica showed resilience in both matches – fighting back well against Boca and netting five second-half goals against Auckland. However, their biggest issue appears to be inconsistency over the full 90 minutes.

While a draw would suit both teams in terms of qualification, we don’t expect Bayern to settle for one. Even with a rotated squad, the German champions should have enough quality to get the job done.

Both teams to score

As we don’t expect a draw, we also don’t expect to see a cagey contest with both teams playing it safe. Instead, we expect to see Bayern taking the initiative against their Portuguese opponents.

However, an attacking Bayern is one that can be exposed defensively. Vincent Kompany’s high defensive line has been a feature all season, and if it’s deployed again here, we can see the Primeira Liga team finding the back of the net.

In both Benfica and Bayern’s matches with Boca, both teams have scored. And with us anticipating a Bayern win, we can see both teams finding the back of the net again in this one.

Bayern to score over 1.5 goals

There’s a reasonable chance Bayern will rotate their starting XI, with Thomas MĂŒller potentially getting a runout against Benfica, but his inclusion is far from guaranteed.

If he does start, MĂŒller could offer good value in the goalscorer markets. He’s 11/4 to score anytime, or 5/4 to either score or assist.

However, given the uncertainty around team selection, a safer option might be backing Bayern to score over 1.5 goals at 10/11. That covers us no matter who starts the match.
