How the incident unfolded
According to police, Darshan’s scooter brushed Kumar’s car near Nataraja Layout around 9pm, damaging the vehicle’s rear-view mirror. Darshan apologised and moved ahead as he was on a food delivery run.
Investigators said Kumar lost his temper and turned back to chase the scooter. “Losing control of himself, he took a U-turn and chased Darshan’s scooter. In a few minutes, he spotted Darshan. Pressing the accelerator, Kumar rammed the car into Darshan’s scooter from behind and sped away. Both Darshan and Varun fell onto the road,” an investigating officer said.
Locals rushed Darshan and his pillion rider Varun to the hospital. Doctors declared Darshan dead on arrival.
CCTV footage changed the case
Darshan’s sister first filed a hit-and-run case with JP Nagar traffic police. Officers reviewed CCTV footage. “To our horror, we discovered that it was not an accident but an intentional act of dashing into Darshan’s scooter from behind. The driver suddenly veered to the left, dashed into the vehicle, and sped away, suggesting it was intentional,” a senior traffic police officer said.
The case was handed over to Puttenahalli police, who registered a murder case after the footage review.
Accused returned to collect car parts
Police said CCTV footage showed the couple returning to the scene at 9.40pm to collect parts that fell off the car. “The couple, wearing masks, was seen collecting parts of the car that had come off while ramming the scooter. The couple then drove back and this time, their faces were clearly visible,” a senior police officer said.
Deputy commissioner of police (South), Lokesh Jagalasar, said the couple confessed to the crime.
Another officer said Kumar told police he was alone during the ramming incident. He claimed his wife only came later to collect broken parts. “However, we will examine his claim. As of now, we have arrested both on murder charges,” the officer said.
Police said the couple returned to the spot to retrieve car parts, and CCTV cameras recorded their movements.
