Wunmi Mosaku, who yesterday received an Oscar nomination, has been in a load of incredible TV series, as well as record-breaking films.

The actor from Manchester is up for the award of best supporting actress for her role as Hoodoo priestess Annie in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners.

Mosaku, 39, has been on our screens for nearly 20 years, and boasts an impressive back catalogue of television and film.

From her early days acting in dramas like ITV’s Vera, through to more recent projects like Marvel’s Loki, we’ve taken a look at some of the best series starring the Oscar-nominee.

Luther

Luther is thought by some to be one of the best British crime shows out there, and Mosaku joined the drama for season five which premiered in 2019.

She plays DS Catherine Halliday, who, alongside DCI John Luther (Idris Elba), are tasked with hunting down a gruesome serial killer in London.

Mosaku plays an officer brought in from the private sector on a fast-track scheme, who initially clashes with Luther before they become closer as the season and case progresses.

Progenic7 on Google said about the series: ‘This show really is the best of the best crime drama.’

Critic Dan Ashby on Rotten Tomatoes called season 5 a ‘non-stop adrenaline ride that refuses to let up for even a moment.’

Luther is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

We Own This City

We’re going stateside for this one, with We Own This City – a HBO miniseries that hit our screens in 2022.

Gripping and eye-opening, the series examines the unit???s devastating impact on the city of Baltimore, where drug prohibition and mass arrests were championed at the expense of actual police work.

Mosaku starred as Nicole Steele, a sharp attorney assigned to the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice in the US.

The show is described as a ‘must-see limited series’ by David Aronofsky on Google.

It’s based on the nonfiction book by reporter Justin Fenton, We Own This City: A True Story of Crime, Cops, and Corruption, and follows a Baltimore police department gone rogue.

As a lawyer, Moskau’s character is there to assist with police reform by drawing up a consent decree with the City of Baltimore.

Thebestbrian on Reddit said it was ‘basically a successor series to The Wire’, while Gorillo5 thought it wasn’t quite on the same level, but was ‘solid for sure’.

Vera

In 2011, Mosaku appeared in ITV’s Vera, playing another detective, Holly Lawson.

The early series of the popular police drama starred the actress alongside Brenda Blethyn, as they try to solve cases in the county of Northumberland.

As part of the investigation team, she gets to work looking into the murders of a teenage boy and a young teacher who died in suspiciously similar circumstances.

Elli Jilek on Google is a huge fan: ‘I’ve re-watched the 8 seasons (so far) several times now and each time I find something ‘new’ that I didn’t quite get the first time round.’

And Vicki Bednar admitted: ‘Absolutely love this show. […] The casting is spot on.’

Vera is available to stream on ITVX.

Loki

Mosaku has a place in the Marvel universe after playing TVA (Time Variance Authority) officer B-15 in Disney+’sLoki.

The sci-fi series came out in 2021, with a second season released in 2023.

Starring Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson, the season two debut saw 10.9m global viewers in its first three days on the streamer – making it the platform’s second most-watched premiere that year.

As the multiverse is showing signs of cracking, and the TVA is in disarray, Mosaku’s character works to guide the authority with it’s new purpose.

What did Metro’s TV Editor Sabrina Barr think of Loki season 2?

Metro’s TV Editor Sabrina Barr gave Loki’s second season 3.5 stars…

Having seen the first four episodes of Loki season two in advance of the premiere on Disney Plus, we can assure you that the joy and enthusiasm that the actor brings to the first episode carries through to the next three instalments, as he steals every scene that he’s in effortlessly.

While the visuals of the fascinating Temporal Loom are spectacular to watch, it did feel as though the stakes in the first episode were too high to make us feel that concerned.

Loki is available to stream on Disney+.

Lovecraft Country

Finally, in the series perhaps most similar to Sinners, Mosaku stars as Ruby Baptiste in HBO’s Lovecraft Country.

This drama series follows Atticus Freeman as he joins his friend Letitia and his Uncle George to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father. What follows is a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from an H.P. Lovecraft paperback.
