Washington, DC-based startup Besxar has announced a significant step in space technology. The company plans to test its semiconductor wafer manufacturing systems in the vacuum of space. To this end, Besxar has signed a contract with SpaceX to fly so-called “Fabship” payloads on twelve Falcon 9 missions. These payloads attach to the rocket boosters and return to Earth with them, providing a unique way to test the resilience of the materials during launch and landing.
The fabships, which are about the size of a microwave oven, are primarily intended to test whether semiconductor materials can be launched and landed safely. Ashley Pilipiszyn, the founder and CEO of Besxar, describes this process as the ultimate “egg drop challenge.” The goal is to return the wafers without deformation or cracks to prove the feasibility of production in space.
Besxar takes a different approach than many other space companies by focusing on exploiting the vacuum conditions of space rather than microgravity. These conditions could enable the purity required for semiconductor manufacturing without the enormous costs associated with creating such conditions on Earth. An example of the high costs on Earth is TSMC’s planned $50 billion investment in a new advanced chip manufacturing facility.
The twelve planned missions are expected to take place within a year and give Besxar the opportunity to quickly develop the design of the Fabships. This strategy is reminiscent of SpaceX’s “Hopper” prototypes, which were used to test launch and landing technologies. Besxar sees itself as an American semiconductor company that uses space to improve manufacturing and strengthen U.S. competitiveness against China.
