Big salaries revealed: SAPS to re-appoint former detectives

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has announced plans to re-appoint 353 former detectives.

The officers, hired on fixed term contracts, will return to the ranks they previously held during their service.

SAPS has also released details of the annual remuneration for the reappointments.

WHAT WILL YOU EARN?

Constables will earn R236 629 per year, sergeants R299 046, and warrant officers R370 905. Captains will be paid R461 676 per annum, and lieutenant-colonels R579 069.

Meanwhile, colonels will receive an inclusive package of R1 022 601 annually.

WHAT IS REQUIRED?

To qualify, applicants must be under the age of 65 and must have previously served as members of the police. A National Senior Certificate or higher qualification is required. Applicants must have a valid Code B driver’s licence and the ability to operate a state vehicle. Candidates must have completed Basic Police Training, have detective experience with a relevant investigative course, and be computer literate.

Other requirements include proficiency in at least two official languages (one being English), a clean disciplinary record. Applicants must hold a South African citizenship. They must also be willing to undergo refresher training, allow for background and fingerprint checks, and have no criminal convictions or pending cases. Visible tattoos while in uniform are prohibited, and candidates must not have been declared unfit to possess a firearm.

STRICT EXCLUSIONS AND INTEGRITY CHECKS

The Service has stressed that individuals who were dismissed, who resigned while facing disciplinary or criminal proceedings, or who left due to medical boarding will not be considered.

According to SAPS, successful candidates may need to relocate and must not engage in any activity that could conflict with the integrity of the police. They are also required to disclose whether they are respondents in interim or final protection orders under the Domestic Violence Act or the Protection from Harassment Act.
