Bill Belichick’s decision to take the head coaching job at North Carolina was met with a great deal of surprise. Belichick is arguably the greatest coach in the history of professional football, and after a year away he will return to the sidelines.
Belichick won’t be back with one of the NFL’s 32 teams, however. For the first time in his illustrious career, Belichick will take over a college football program with the North Carolina Tar Heels.
UNC isnt’ expected to be a major contender in Belichick’s first season, but they will be one of the most talked-about teams in the country this year. Fans and members of the media were eager to learn more about the program in the offseason, and it seems that everyone will get the chance to do just that.
What’s In Store for the Tar Heels?
On Monday, Belichick and the Tar Heels announced that a documentary is in works for Hulu, chronicling the 2025 season. The documentary appears to be similar in style with other sports documentaries like Amazon’s “All or Nothing,” HBO’s “Hard Knocks” and Netflix’s “Quarterback.”
“It’s going to feature the players working hard, which you guys do. It’s about the players improving and getting better through their hard work, which you do,” Belichick said in a video addressing his team on Monday.
“And a program starting from where it started from several months ago to wherever it’s gonna go during the course of the season, which, of course, will be determined on the field. It’ll show our commitment to winning, it’ll show our commitment to the team, and that’s our priority.”
What’s Next For North Carolina?
Earlier this year, USA TODAY reported that Belichick and the Tar Heels initially planned to debut a “Hard Knocks”-style show on HBO Max, but that Belichick’s young girlfriend wanted to be a major part of the program.
The 73-year-old Belichick coached for several teams in the NFL, most notably with the New England Patriots. He led New England to become a dynasty, winning six Super Bowl titles and playing in two more editions of the championship game.
North Carolina is looking to improve on its 6-7 record from a season ago. They advanced to the Fenway Bowl in Boston, where they lost to UConn in a close matchup. The team is set to open the new season this weekend, as they’ll face the TCU Horned Frogs in primetime on Monday night.
We’ll see how the documentary is received, and how much Belichick and the Tar Heels are willing to show – especially if they end up having a challenging season.
