Experts warn that the situation will worsen further, especially for poultry farmers who face significant risks. The bird flu, caused by the highly contagious H5N1 virus, has affected almost all federal states in Germany, with the exception of Bremen. The situation is alarming as infections in wild birds continue to increase and the risk of introduction into commercial poultry flocks is significant. The southern German states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg are particularly affected, where new cases were recently reported.
In total, farms in eight federal states are affected, which has led to drastic measures such as the culling of thousands of animals. In Baden-Württemberg alone, 15,000 animals were killed, while in Rees on the Lower Rhine almost 19,000 animals were removed preventively. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania also recorded significant losses when almost 150,000 laying hens had to be killed.
The Friedrich Loeffler Institute predicts the situation will worsen further as the viral load in wild birds remains high. Poultry farmers are encouraged to claim financial damages through the animal disease insurance fund. In the Cloppenburg district of Lower Saxony, 20,500 turkeys were culled in mid-October to curb the aggressive spread of the disease.
The trade press is drawing parallels to one of the most serious outbreaks in Germany in the winter of 2020/21, when over two million animals were affected. Current forecasts indicate that the number of affected farms and animals killed will continue to rise as the current infection rate is far more intense than in previous years.
