Blood Moon rising: South Africa’s sky set for a fiery red eclipse

Skywatchers in South Africa are about to witness a cosmic showstopper.

On Sunday, 7 September, a rare total lunar eclipse, popularly called a Blood Moon, will turn the night sky into a stage of fiery red.

This is not just another eclipse; it’s expected to be the longest total lunar eclipse since 2022, making it a prime night for skywatchers.

When and where to see the Blood Moon

As reported by the George Herald, the moon will begin slipping into Earth’s shadow in the early evening on 7 September. By around 20:11, the eclipse will hit its dramatic peak as the moon glows a deep, otherworldly red.

The total eclipse phase will last just over an hour, and best of all, it will be visible nationwide, provided the weather cooperates.

But why does the moon turn red?

The “Blood Moon” effect is no trick of the eye. As sunlight filters through Earth’s atmosphere, shorter wavelengths are scattered away, leaving only the longer red hues to bathe the moon in an eerie crimson glow.

Such intense red eclipses don’t come often. Astronomers highlight that this one will be among the most vivid of the decade. So, mark your calendars!

Will you be waiting to see this spectacle?
