Six years ago, hopeless romantics across the globe were introduced to Bridgerton on Netflix for the very first time… and we haven’t been the same since.

In a world that’s rife with cynicism and despair, this luscious period drama based on the books by author Julia Quinn offers unbridled escapism that’s impossible to resist.

So far, every Bridgerton sibling who’s fronted their own season has found their match within the upper class. Daphne’s ruse with Simon, the Duke of Hastings, developed into full-blown love. Anthony fell for Kate Sharma, after previously being engaged to her sister. And Colin finally realised the strength of his feelings for his childhood friend, Penelope.

However, season 4 goes in a different direction. The second-eldest brother, Benedict (Luke Thompson) finds himself enchanted by a woman at a masquerade ball. Little does he know that the mystery figure who’s captured his heart is Sophie, (Yerin Ha) who works as a maid.

Bridgerton fans are already familiar with several characters who work in the households, such as Mrs Varley (Lorraine Ashbourne), the Featherington family’s housekeeper. But never has the show delved so deeply into the ‘upstairs-downstairs’ dynamic.

‘It’s been a blessing,’ Yerin, 28, told Metro. ‘I think it just really opens up whole new doors for Bridgerton. I think it grounds, it makes it more realistic-ish. It’s less pretty and shiny and glamorous, which I think is quite nice.

‘It’s the fourth season now, so it’s nice to have a change of energy and pace. I’m excited for the audiences to see that.’

Luke, 37, agreed. ‘It’s nice to see the other side of the coin, because they speak to each other,’ he said, having been a part of Bridgerton since season one.

‘It’s sort of baked into the story, in a way, isn’t it? In a story that does seem to be about fantasy and reality, it is about the performance of the Tom and then suddenly you get a stronger flavour of the real world in Bridgerton, what reality means in Bridgerton, which I think is really interesting, because the Ton world can feel like a bit of a bubble sometimes.’

Two more Bridgerton stars who’ve been a part of the fabric of the show since the start are Golda Rosheuvel and Adjoa and Andoh, who play the formidable Queen Charlotte and Lady Danbury respectively.

Golda, 55, who tugged at heartstrings in her spin-off series about Charlotte’s love story with George, admitted that Bridgerton season four ‘did feel [as though it had] different themes this time around’.

‘There’s a lot going on,’ she said, cryptically calling the new season ‘interesting’.

Adjoa, 63, added that there are ‘lovely new cast members when we go downstairs’.

‘There’s a freshness to it,’ she stated. ‘British society is class from top to bottom. Our show is not a sociology project, but even to discuss class in this way is really lovely to see.

‘What does keep the glittering household going? It’s those people downstairs. So what are their lives like and what happens when the two worlds actually cross over?’

We can’t wait to find out.

Bridgerton season 4 part 1 premieres on Thursday January 29 on Netflix.
