Brits are just discovering what Jammie Dodger actually means — and it’s not about jam

Biscuit lovers were left stunned last year after learning what’s really inside a Jammie Dodger – as it turns out, it’s not strawberry or raspberry jam.

The bright red substance is actually apple jam, which is then flavoured with raspberry to give it the right taste and berry hue.

But it seems this isn’t the only thing people didn’t know about the iconic biscuits, owned by Fox’s Burton’s Companies (FBC), as many are only just finding out what the name means.

The meaning behind Jammie Dodgers’ name came to light during an episode of Inside the Factory on BBC One, as staff revealed the filling wasn’t actually the inspiration – a Beano character was.

In the episode, aired on January 6, host Paddy McGuinness spoke to Rebecca Phillips, the general manager at the brand’s Llantarnam factory.

Rebecca revealed that the name Jammie Dodger is actually a reference to Beano’s Roger the Dodger.

The character first appeared in 1953 and is one of the longest-running characters in the popular comic.

‘Just like our biscuits, Roger was said always to be jammy enough to get himself out of sticky situations,’ Rebecca explained.

On Reddit, people’s minds were blown by this new little tidbit, with many admitting they assumed the name was just because of the jam.

A user known only as u/OppositeInvestment13 said: ‘Does anyone know why Jammie Dodgers are called Jammie Dodgers? I thought it was because they had jam in the middle, but it turns out it’s a Beano character?’

Similarly, u/Illustrious_Fill_881 wrote: ‘My fave comic and my fave biscuit are related – who’d have thought!’

While u/FarBeach1530 commented: ‘No way! I thought it was because of the jam!’

‘I could swear it was about mischief, so a Beano character makes sense, I suppose,’ posted u/wiillustration.

And u/electrophile888 added: ‘Well, I never.’
