Two British men have appeared in court in Indonesia accused of trying to smuggle cocaine into the country.

Kial Robinson, 29, and Piran Ezra Wilkinson, 48, are being held by Bali’s Narcotic Agency.

And if found guilty they could face being executed by firing squad or life in prison.

Robinson, who owns a landscape gardening business, was stopped at Bali International Airport on September 3 after taking a Turkish Airlines flight from Barcelona.

Security staff allegedly found a package containing 1.3kg of cocaine in his rucksack.

Wilkinson, a property manager, was arrested at a villa in the early hours of September 4.

Made Dwi Saputra, spokesperson for Bali’s Narcotic Agency, said two British nationals had been arrested but did not confirm their identities.

He added: ‘On Tuesday, we will carry out a modest ceremony to destroy some narcotic evidence, as well as a press release on several cases.’

Both men are from Chichester in West Sussex and the Foreign Office is aware of their situation.

A spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘We have been made aware of two British nationals who have been detained in Bali. We continue consular support for both and are in contact with the local authorities.’

Robinson and Wilkinson are the latest Brits to get in trouble with the Indonesian authorities over allegedly smuggling drugs into Bali.

Earlier this year, three British drug mules who tried to smuggle cocaine into Bali disguised in Angel Delight packets were spared the death penalty and sentenced to one year each in prison.

Electrician Thomas Parker also avoided the death penalty after initially being accused of smuggling a kilo of MDMA into the country.

He was handed a 10-month prison sentence for ‘hiding information from authorities’ over the smuggled package.

And Andrea Waldeck spent almost 10 years in prison after being found guilty of drug smuggling – she died suddenly last year aged 53 with only nine months of her sentence left to serve.

The last executions for drug smuggling, of an Indonesian and three Nigerians, were carried out in July 2016.

Nearly nine in 10 prisoners on death row were found guilty of drug-related offences, according to a report last year by Amnesty International.

According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, 96 foreigners were on death row, all on drug charges, as of November.
