Bruce Willis’ wife, Emma Heming Willis, has been promoting her new book, The Unexpected Journey, which is slated to hit shelves next month. One stop on her promo tour included an intimiate chat with Diane Sawyer.
In a clip from the upcoming interview, Heming Willis got emotional while talking about her husband amid his ongoing health issues. Willis was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in 2023.
According to ABC News, Heming Willis shared that her husband is in “great health” despite his condition.
“Bruce is still very mobile,” she said. “Bruce is in really great health overall, you know. It’s just his brain that is failing him.”
“The language is going, and, you know, we’ve learned to adapt,” she contnued. “And we have a way of communicating with him, which is just a … different way.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Heming Willis noted that she still sees glimses of her husband come through at times, though things have drastically changed due to his health.
“Not days, but we get moments. It’s his laugh, right? He has such a hearty laugh. And sometimes you’ll see that twinkle in his eye, or that smirk. I just get transported,” Heming Willis said. “And it’s just hard to see, because as quickly as those moments appear, then it goes,” she added through tears.
Willis and Heming Willis tied the knot in 2009, more than a decade before his diagnosis. The couple shares two children, Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11. Willis is also a dad to three older daughters — Rumer Willis, Tallulah Willis, and Scout Willis — with his ex-wife, actress Demi Moore.
Willis’ inspiration for her new book came after she received her husband’s life-changing diagnosis without much explanation or support. The book is meant to offer support to people in caregiver roles, discussing the mental toll it takes, especially for those caring for loved ones who are suffering with dementia.
“This is the book I trust will help the next caregiver. It is filled with support, insight, and the hope needed to navigate this journey,” Heming Willis captioned an Instagram post in April.
Willis celebrated his 70th birthday in March.
